Check From Another Mailbox in Darien Stolen, Washed, Fraudulently Cashed

Sometime in the last week of January, a check was stolen from a Brookside Road resident’s mailbox, then washed, a larger amount of money written on it and a different payee, then cashed, Darien police said. According to police:

The victim said he put an envelope containing the check in his mailbox on Jan. 26. Then, on Feb. 1, he looked at his bank statement, which showed the check was cashed for a larger amount and made payable to someone he didn’t know.

In the latest cases of mailbox thefts, checks were stolen before mail carriers picked them up, then the checks were washed and higher amounts added that were given to people with different names, police said. A check put in an envelope placed in a home mailbox on Bittersweet Lane was stolen, washed, rewritten and fraudulently cashed, police said. The victim told police he put the envelope in his home mailbox on Jan. 9. He noticed on Jan.

A thief somehow got ahold of a check from an envelope put in a mailbox at Darien Post Office, then cashed it with a name the victim isn’t familiar with, Darien police said. The check was mailed on Jan. 20, but on April 2, the business where the check was directed contacted the victim to say that no payment had been received. The victim checked the bank account, which showed the check had been cashed on Jan. 26 — but after it was endorsed by a stranger.

A man who put a check in the mail, using his mailbox on Coachlamp Lane, later found it had been cashed for a different amount and to a different person. Darien police gave these additional details:

On Feb. 22, the man put the check in his mailbox at about 8 a.m. On March 22, he saw on his bank statement that the check had been cashed, but for a much bigger amount of money. When the man looked at an image of the check, he saw it was made out to someone he didn’t know. He reported the theft to police on April 8.
