Alexander Boris Diekmann passed away peacefully on Feb. 1, 2016, at his home in Bozeman, Mont., after a courageous battle with cancer.
Alexander Diekmann, 52, a Darien High School graduate who lived in Montana, passed away on Feb. 1.
Alex was born Feb. 10, 1963, in Van Nuys, Calif., to Kurt Karl Maximilian and Marianne Edith (Barthel) Diekmann.
Alex graduated from Darien High School in 1981 and received his BA from Yale University in 1985 where he met his wife, Lisa Lundal, at a freshman party in Lawrence Hall on Old Campus.
Alex learned to swim when he was two years old, was a nationally ranked junior swimmer, and a member of the Yale Varsity Swim Team for four years. Alex and Lisa were married at Dwight Chapel on the Old Campus at Yale University on Nov. 22, 1991. They spent their honeymoon hiking in Patagonia and the rest of their life enjoying the great outdoors together and later with their sons, Logan and Liam.

Following Yale, Alex worked as a financial analyst for Merrill Lynch in New York and San Francisco. He received his MBA from the UCLA Anderson School of Management in 1989 and moved to New York shortly thereafter to work for Jones Lang Wootton a leading global commercial real estate services and investment management firm.
Alex moved to Seattle in 1994 to work for Clarion Partners until 1999 when he moved to Bozeman, Mont., and found his forever home. After moving to Montana, Alex took a position with The Trust for Public Land where he worked for 16 years until the time of his death.
Alex cherished the work that he did as senior project manager for The Trust for Public Land. He was instrumental in conserving many thousands of acres in Montana and Wyoming, including the Taylor Fork in the Gallatin Canyon, Haskill Basin near Whitefish, the Whitefish Lake Conservation Project, Three Dollar Bridge, and the restoration of O’Dell Creek in the Madison Valley.
Alex loved Montana and the Big Sky country. He enjoyed trail running, fishing, and Nordic skiing most of all. If Alex was not working or spending time with his family, he was running or skiing the trails around Bozeman with his dog, Ruby, or fishing with Logan and Liam. Alex was much too young but he will be remembered forever. He did not tell his children how to live. He lived and showed them how to do it well.
Alex is preceded in death by his father, Kurt Karl Maximilian Diekmann. He is survived by his wife, Lisa, and his sons, Logan and Liam; his mother, Marianne of Darien; and his sister, Tina Diekmann of Salt Lake City, Utah.
A celebration of Alex’s life will be held later this spring in Bozeman, Montana.
