Not every body gets off work on Thanksgiving Day and not everybody gets back to work on Friday. Here’s what’s open and what’s closed, what has different hours and what changes schedule.

Wednesday, Thanksgiving EVE, Nov. 21
— Darien Thrift Shop is closed. It reopens on Saturday.
Some early closings.
—Darien Public Schools close early.
—Darien Library will close early, at 6 p.m. (It won’t open again until Friday morning.)
—YWCA Darien/Norwalk will close early, at 12 noon. It won’t reopen again until Monday at 9 a.m.
—Person-to-Person will close early, at 12 noon. It won’t reopen again until Monday.
—Darien Farmers Market opens at 11 a.m., as usual, but closes at 3 p.m. an hour early. This is the last Darien Farmers Market of the year.
—Grieb’s Pharmacy closes at 5 p.m.
— Stepping Stones Museum for Children closes at 3 p.m.
FOOD
—Costco will be open from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. (The pharmacy is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.)
—Palmer’s Market will be open until 8 p.m.
—Stew Leonard’s in Norwalk will be open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
—Stop and Shop will be open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
—Trader Joe’s will be open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
—Whole Foods will be open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Happening
- Grand Central’s Thanksgiving Market Open for One Day: Thanksgiving Eve (8 a.m. to 7 p.m.)
- Darien Farmers Market (to repeat what’s above) opens at 11 a.m., as usual, but closes at 3 p.m. an hour early. This is the last Darien Farmers Market of the year.
- ‘Papillon’ Wednesday Matinee at Darien Library (1:30 to 4 p.m.)
THANKSGIVING — Thursday, Nov. 22
Just about everything is closed, except stores that want to sell you early Christmas gifts, some supermarkets and pharmacies.
—Darien Public Schools are closed. They won’t reopen until Monday.
—The Darien YMCA will be open only from 7 a.m. to 12 noon.
—YWCA Darien/Norwalk will be closed.
—Darien Library is closed.
—Local, state and national government offices are all closed.
—Darien Senior Center is closed.
—At Home In Darien is closed.
—The Post Office is closed.
—The Dump is closed (also known as the Darien Recycling Center and Darien transfer station).
—The Darien Community Association will be closed.
—Person-to-Person will be closed.
— Darien Thrift Shop is closed. It reopens on Saturday.
FOOD
—Costco will be closed.
—Palmer’s Market will be closed.
—Stew Leonard’s in Norwalk will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

PHARMACIES
—The pharmacy at CVS in Darien will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
—Walgreens store will be open Thanksgiving Day, but the pharmacy will be closed this day. The pharmacy is open until 9 p.m., Wednesday night and will open again at 9 a.m., Friday morning. The store is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. all three days.
—Grieb’s Pharmacy will be open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. (“We are open every day of the year, except Christmas Day.”)
—Costco will be closed.
TRANSPORTATION
—CTTransit buses in Stamford and Darien are on a Sunday schedule. Buses between Stamford and White Plains, New York (971) and Norwalk (341) also will run on a Sunday schedule. (But you won’t have a fixed-route bus to take in Norwalk this day.)
—Norwalk Transit District buses on fixed routes will not be running.
Happening
- Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.)
- Rowayton Turkey Trot: Fun Running on Thanksgiving Morning starts at 9:30 a.m. (You’ll need to register.)
- Turkey Bowl: Blue Wave vs the Rams begins at 10:30 a.m. at Boyle Stadium in Stamford.
- Special Thanksgiving Day Service at First Church of Christ, Scientist in Darien starting at 10:30 a.m. All are invited.
Black Friday, Nov. 23
The official start of the Christmas shopping season, with crowds looking for special bargains

—The Dump is open (also known as the Darien Recycling Center and Darien transfer station).
—Connecticut state offices will be open.
—U.S. federal offices will be open.
—The Post Office will be open.
—The Department of Motor Vehicles office at 540 Main Ave., Norwalk will be open for normal business hours: 7:45 a.m. to 4 p.m.
—The Darien YMCA will be open.
—YWCA Darien/Norwalk will be closed.
—The Darien Community Association will be closed.
