Fundraising starts late this month to decorate graves of veterans in Darien. It costs $15 for each wreath placed on a grave during the annual December ceremony. You can also contribute to the Darien project online right now.
Last year, wreaths covered all 2,184 graves in the veterans section at Spring Grove.
You can give money at Darien Doughnuts on Heights Road from 8 to 11:30 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 29. The annual Wreaths Across America wreath-laying is scheduled for 12 noon on Saturday, Dec.15, in Darien’s Spring Grove Veterans’ Cemetery.
At Darien Doughnuts on Sept. 29 will be Carol Wilder Tamme (a member of Darien’s Good Wife’s River Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution), VFW member Allan Bixler (a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 6933 in Darien). Monuments and Ceremonies Commission members Sharon Bixler and Karen Polett also will be on hand to collect.
David Polett, also a member of the Monuments and Ceremonies Commission, has agreed to take over the duties of site and location coordinator for Wreaths Across America 2018.
The public is always encouraged to purchase wreath sponsorships and to attend this ceremony to help with the wreath placement.
You Can Give Online: Here’s How
- Wreaths also can be ordered directly from Wreaths Across America, with the Group ID Code of CT 0007 and the Location Code of CTSGVD noted on the check/order form so that wreaths arrive at the Darien location.
- The mailing address is WAA, PO Box 249 Columbia Falls, Maine 04623.
- Wreaths can also be ordered at the website of WAA, a non-profit (501) (3) founded to expand the annual wreath laying at Arlington Cemetery.
In addition to Arlington, wreaths are placed on the headstones of fallen veterans at more than 800 locations throughout the country.
