A 27-year-old woman who was part of a forged check cashing ring in 2014 has been arrested on charges of committing that crime in Darien, police said.

Police gave this account (including accusations not proven in court) of the matter:

Kazia Kostrzewa of Hartford cashed a forged check for $995 at a bank in Darien in June 2014. That check was among others that had been stolen from manufacturing companies in Stamford. A ring of at least five people had been cashing them at area banks.

Kostrzewa used her own name and driver’s license to cash the check, and the bank provided police with surveillance photos identifying her.

Kostrzewa was already in custody and was appearing in a court hearing in Stamford on Feb. 23, when Darien police served her with an arrest warrant charging her with second-degree forgery and fifth-degree larceny.

She is in court on other charges of larceny and forgery based on arrests in Stamford and Norwalk stemming from incidents in May 2014, as well as other charges. Her bond in the Darien case is set at $1,000, and she is due back in court on March 11.
