It’s been said that life’s too short for bad wine, but it’s also true that good wine can be expensive — except when it’s a steal. That appears to be what happened recently when some bottles went missing from the wine cellar of a house for sale on Leeuwarden Road.

Darien police gave this account of the incident:

A 63-year-old resident of the house had been away for a few weeks before July 30, when the theft was reported to police. Numerous potential house buyers went through the house in that time.

On July 27, when the man returned home, he noticed that not only did two or three dozen bottles of wine appear to be missing, but it looked like other bottles had been moved around in an attempt to disguise the theft.

The victim told police he intended to compile a detailed list of the missing wine, but he gave an initial estimate of $3,000 for the total value of the items. Police have no suspects but are continuing to investigate.
