A $3,250 Cartier watch left in the Equinox fitness club at 72 Heights Road is missing after its 41-year-old Darien owner left it there, police were told.

The incident appears to be a theft by someone who came across the watch, possibly while the woman was showering or just afterward. The incident is very similar to a case the month before at the Darien YMCA, although there’s no reason to believe the two thefts are related. (Finding property and not turning it over to police is considered larceny under Connecticut law.)

The owner told police on Jan. 5 that the day before, at about 9:40 a.m., she was working out at the gym, then went to take a shower and put her clothing and the stainless steel Tank Francaise model watch on a table by the shower stall.

While she was taking the shower, she thought she heard the wristwatch fall from the table and land on the shower room floor.

In a rush, she gathered her belongings and left the gym in a hurry, but about a half hour later, she realized she wasn’t wearing the watch.

She called Equinox, and employees looked for the lost item but didn’t find it. She went back and looked herself, checking a number of places, but she couldn’t find it, either.

There was no security camera in the area where the watch was last seen, and employees didn’t recall any suspicious activity. There were no other reports of anything else taken at the gym around that time.

Wristwatch Theft the Month Before

Back on Dec. 21, a 43-year-old Darien woman reported a $4,800 wristwatch stolen while she was at the Darien YMCA. on Dec. 5.

The owner said she was at the YMCA from 4 to 5:15 p.m. that day, and she had put her watch with other belongings in the women’s locker room. She was in a rush, she said, and quickly grabbed her belongings when she left.

That evening, she realized the watch was missing and contacted the YMCA, but the watch hadn’t been found. The woman said the locker where she left her belongings was secured, but she believes she accidentally left the watch in the bathroom connected to the locker room.

There was no sign the lock she put on her locker was tampered with. The woman put up signs around the YMCA.

The watch is a silver and gold Omega Constellation.
