Three high school students from Darien about to graduate have been accepted at U.S. military service academies — James Bieler and Drew Durkin are going to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point; and Christine Fiore is headed for the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD.

All three students are among those invited by U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy to a reception Sunday, June 10 to honor students from across Connecticut who have been appointed to the nation’s service academies.

In addition to the academies at West Point and Annapolis, Connecticut students have been accepted into the U.S. Air Force Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

Each year, members of Congress nominate candidates for appointment to the nation’s service academies. Graduates are commissioned as officers in the active or reserve components of the military or Merchant Marine and serve for a minimum of five years.
