Police: 21-Year-Old Suspect in Feb 6 Car Theft Charged With Felony Larceny

When Mekai Darden, 21, of Bridgeport showed up in court in that city on March 31, it was for motor vehicle violations that he didn’t need to be jailed for — but Darien police were there to arrest him on a warrant charging him with the theft of a sport utility vehicle. He’s been in jail ever since, for about a week, in lieu of a $100,000 bond. Darien police described what happened with this account, including accusations not proven in court:

On Sunday, Feb. 6, 2022, the owner of a Porsche Cayenne told police that the car was missing from his driveway on Contentment Island Road. The keys had been left in the unlocked vehicle the night before.

A woman saw a white car back into her driveway on Leroy Avenue at about 6 p.m., while it was still twilight, Friday and thought someone she knew was visiting. Then she saw someone go into her unlocked vehicle. Sunset that day was at 5:41 p.m.

Darien police gave this additional account of the incident, which was reported at 6:07 p.m.

The suspect, a male wearing a baseball hat and “face covering,” as police described it, saw the woman and ran back to his car. The woman didn’t see anything missing from her vehicle, perhaps because she interrupted the would-be thief. The aborted theft happened outside a home on Leroy Avenue between Midbrook Lane and Highfield Lane.

Latest Unlocked Motor Vehicles Entered Overnight by Thieves

In one of the four most recent motor vehicle burglaries reported in town, the owner of a vehicle parked outside his home on Apple Tree Lane told police that, he found his vehicle had been entered and items were stolen from it. According to police:

The victim discovered the theft at about 9 a.m., Thursday morning, Feb. 17 when he saw the vehicle had been rummaged through and a Bose portable speaker was missing. Video surveillance records showed a male wearing a dark blue hoodie and white sneakers walking from his driveway the night before, at 7:15. The vehicle had been unlocked.

Porsche Stolen Overnight, Apparently Unlocked and With Keys Inside, Found in North Salem, NY

A Contentment Island Road resident said a set of keys was left in his 2018 Porsche Cayenne, but he didn’t know if he locked the SUV before it was stolen sometime overnight, Saturday to Sunday, Feb. 5 to 6, police said. According to Darien police:

Surveillance video from a neighbor shows a male looking into vehicles at 1:30 a.m. that Sunday morning. At 2:19 p.m. that day, New York State Police found the sport utility vehicle in North Salem, New York. Darien police detectives are investigating the incident.

Mercedes, Unlocked and With Keys Inside, Stolen in Darien, Tracked to New Jersey Town Two Hours Away

A Ridge Acres Road resident told police that his 2020 Mercedes AMG car was stolen from his driveway sometime overnight from Monday to Tuesday, Jan. 24 to 25. The car had been unlocked and with a spare set of keys left inside. The vehicle was tracked with GPS and found (unoccupied) in Parlin, New Jersey, a town about two hours away from Darien. The vehicle was towed from the scene.
