Driver Leaves Car Unlocked and Running, Thief Leaves in Car and Gets a Free Trip to New Haven

After leaving his car unlocked and running as he ran into a gas station, the driver came back out to see his 2008 Honda running with someone else driving it out of the parking lot and onto Interstate 95, Darien police were told. The victim reported the theft to police at 10:53 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 26, presumably from the Mobil gas station at 211 Post Road, where the incident happened. The Accord was found the next day in New Haven.

Twice last week, Darien residents told police that, overnight, their sport utility vehicles, unlocked and with the keys inside, as usually happens in these cases, were stolen. The week before, it was a car stolen from a third resident, in just the same way. VERSE ONE:

On Tuesday, Oct. 23, a resident of Dubois Street told police that his 2002 BMW X7 was missing. Police met with the owner at 7:27 a.m. At 9 a.m., the vehicle was found in the Jamaica section of Queens in New York City.

Police: Woman Scares Off Thief Who Smashed Her Car Window at Stony Brook Park

A woman leaving Stony Brook Park saw the window of her car had been smashed, and a male was still inside the vehicle. She yelled at him, and he fled, driving away in a white Toyota 4runner, she told police. The incident took place shortly before 4:56 p.m. on July 30, a Saturday. Police went to the scene. Nothing appeared to be missing from the vehicle, the woman told police.

Police: 21-Year-Old Suspect in Feb 6 Car Theft Charged With Felony Larceny

When Mekai Darden, 21, of Bridgeport showed up in court in that city on March 31, it was for motor vehicle violations that he didn’t need to be jailed for — but Darien police were there to arrest him on a warrant charging him with the theft of a sport utility vehicle. He’s been in jail ever since, for about a week, in lieu of a $100,000 bond. Darien police described what happened with this account, including accusations not proven in court:

On Sunday, Feb. 6, 2022, the owner of a Porsche Cayenne told police that the car was missing from his driveway on Contentment Island Road. The keys had been left in the unlocked vehicle the night before.

Would-Be Thief Enters Unlocked Vehicle a Little Early, Owner Spots Him, He Runs

A woman saw a white car back into her driveway on Leroy Avenue at about 6 p.m., while it was still twilight, Friday and thought someone she knew was visiting. Then she saw someone go into her unlocked vehicle. Sunset that day was at 5:41 p.m.

Darien police gave this additional account of the incident, which was reported at 6:07 p.m.

The suspect, a male wearing a baseball hat and “face covering,” as police described it, saw the woman and ran back to his car. The woman didn’t see anything missing from her vehicle, perhaps because she interrupted the would-be thief. The aborted theft happened outside a home on Leroy Avenue between Midbrook Lane and Highfield Lane.

Latest Unlocked Motor Vehicles Entered Overnight by Thieves

In one of the four most recent motor vehicle burglaries reported in town, the owner of a vehicle parked outside his home on Apple Tree Lane told police that, he found his vehicle had been entered and items were stolen from it. According to police:

The victim discovered the theft at about 9 a.m., Thursday morning, Feb. 17 when he saw the vehicle had been rummaged through and a Bose portable speaker was missing. Video surveillance records showed a male wearing a dark blue hoodie and white sneakers walking from his driveway the night before, at 7:15. The vehicle had been unlocked.

Laptop and iPad Stolen From Vehicle Left Unlocked for 20 Minutes Downtown

When a man got back in his vehicle after leaving it parked downtown for 20 minutes, he found that the glove compartment was open. He also noticed that his backpack was missing, along with the iPad and laptop that were in it. Darien police said the man told them he left the car, unlocked, at 8:55 p.m. and returned to it at 9:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 16. Police said the vehicle was parked in the “Tilly Parking Lot” and also gave the address as 4 West Ave.

Porsche Stolen Overnight, Apparently Unlocked and With Keys Inside, Found in North Salem, NY

A Contentment Island Road resident said a set of keys was left in his 2018 Porsche Cayenne, but he didn’t know if he locked the SUV before it was stolen sometime overnight, Saturday to Sunday, Feb. 5 to 6, police said. According to Darien police:

Surveillance video from a neighbor shows a male looking into vehicles at 1:30 a.m. that Sunday morning. At 2:19 p.m. that day, New York State Police found the sport utility vehicle in North Salem, New York. Darien police detectives are investigating the incident.

Mercedes, Unlocked and With Keys Inside, Stolen in Darien, Tracked to New Jersey Town Two Hours Away

A Ridge Acres Road resident told police that his 2020 Mercedes AMG car was stolen from his driveway sometime overnight from Monday to Tuesday, Jan. 24 to 25. The car had been unlocked and with a spare set of keys left inside. The vehicle was tracked with GPS and found (unoccupied) in Parlin, New Jersey, a town about two hours away from Darien. The vehicle was towed from the scene.
