As of this evening, the Old Kings Highway North I-95 overpass has reopened to two-way traffic. After several months of vehicular traffic being permitted to only travel northbound on Old Kings Highway North, it is now open in both directions. According to the contractor, New England Road Inc., the project is coming to a close.  Although minor daytime construction will be taking place on Friday May 25, 2018 and possibly a few days next week, police officers and or flagman will safely facilitate traffic flow in both directions with only minor delays. Thank you for your patience and cooperation. — an announcement from Darien Police

Ban on Westbound Traffic Starts June 7 for Old Kings Hwy North Bridge During Replacement Project

If you use Old King’s Highway North bridge over Interstate 95 to go toward the Post Road, then starting Wednesday, June 7, you’ll have a detour onto the highway for months as the bridge is replaced , Darien police have announced. Previous plans called for the traffic closure to take place in April, but the state project was then delayed. This time, the announcement from Darien police has a specific date (Wednesday) in the very near future. Here’s the announcement:
The Old Kings Highway North bridge over Interstate 95 in Darien will be closing to all westbound traffic on June 7, 2017.  All OKHN traffic coming westbound (towards the Post Road), will be required 24/7 to enter I-95 northbound lanes as the posted detour. All eastbound OKHN traffic (from the Post Road) will still be able to travel through the area towards Rowayton or onto I-95 northbound.

Work on replacing the Old Kings Highway North bridge over Interstate 95 will mean various delays in upcoming weeks and months and, for drivers headed toward the Post Road, there will be a detour away from the bridge starting late in April and continuing through most of the time it takes to replace the bridge. That looks like the biggest  inconvenience for drivers during the project, of the several mentioned in a news release early Friday afternoon from Darien Police Department. The Police Commission is the official Local Traffic Authority for the town, and the announcement from the Police Department was issued in its name. Through mid-April, delays can be expected as the bridge is reduced to one lane of alternating traffic. Vehicles headed over the bridge away from the Post Road will continue to be able to use the highway entrance for Interstate 95 North, even when traffic headed toward the Post Road is diverted onto I-95 (vehicles can then get off at Exit 13 and take a left at the Post Road to complete the detour).

Replacement Starts April 1 for Old Kings Hwy North Bridge Over Interstate 95

Work on completely replacing the Old Kings Highway North Bridge over Interstate 95 is scheduled to start April 1 and will result in lane closures on both the interstate highway and the road. The project is supposed to end by Nov. 26 (the Sunday after Thanksgiving) and will result in complete closure of Old Kings Highway North over the bridge apparently only on eight overnight periods, the state Department of Transportation announced on Friday. Darienite.com had reported an official saying in January that state officials expected the bridge to be closed all day for as many as eight days during the project, but that idea is not in the official announcement. Instead, it appears traffic will be able to go over the bridge at some point on every day of the project, especially during commuting times.

ConnDOT Plans to Replace Old Kings Hwy North Bridge Over Highway This Year

The Interstate 95 underpass at Old Kings Highway North in Darien is expected to be closed for eight days sometime this year as the Connecticut Department of Transportation replaces it, a Darien police official says. The bridge has been repaired and refurbished in the past, but apparently never replaced, and it seems to be an original structure of the highway, dating back to when I-95 was built in the late 1950s, said Darien Police Capt. Don Anderson, who coordinates police involvement with traffic changes in town. The replacement bridge is expected to be constructed in place, and traffic detours will use the I-95 on ramp located next to the bridge and Exit 13. Those drivers who would normally traveling from the Post Road down Old Kings Highway North toward Norwalk might use either Tokeneke Road in Darien or Richards Avenue in Norwalk. Workers at the Darien North rest stop, who now cut through the Parklands Office Park property to get on Old Kings Highway North and then cross the bridge to get to buses on the Post Road could be high and dry if they don’t make alternate arrangements for the eight days the bridge is expected to be out of commission.
