Mail Stolen From a Home Mailbox and Perhaps From Outside Darien Post Office

In separate incidents, Darien victims said their mail was stolen, including one case where an Intervale Road resident said he saw it happen. The incidents were reported to police on the same day, Monday, Oct. 10. Darien police gave these accounts of what happened:

At about 9:25 a.m., the Intervale Road resident said that while sitting in his house, he watched a silver Prius drive up to his mailbox, where the driver took items from it. The victim checked the mailbox and found nothing in it.

Police: Employee Admits to Stealing From a Business, Almost $200K Stolen Since 2017

A 40-year-old employee of an unnamed Darien business admitted to defrauding it for years, Darien police said. She stole close to $200,000 since 2017, they said. Police gave this account, including accusations not proven in court:

On Aug. 4, 2022, a woman told police she suspected one of her employees, Daria Opolski, of embezzling at least $50,000 from the business over the course of years. The victim said she round discrepancies while reviewing the company’s financial records, with payments made to credit cards that didn’t belong to the business.

Credit Card, Checkbook Stolen from Unlocked Car at Cherry Lawn Park

A woman who left her purse in her unlocked car at Cherry Lawn Park on Tuesday, Aug. 23  told police that the checkbook and credit cards inside it were stolen. The woman told police she was away from the vehicle for about an hour, and when she returned to it, she didn’t realize anything was missing. But later that day she found that her credit card had been used at Best Buy. Police are continuing to investigate the matter.

Those Mailboxes Outside Darien Post Office Don’t Appear To Be Safe For Your Outgoing Checks

Twice last week, town residents who mailed checks from the mailboxes for outgoing mail at Darien Post Office found that their checks had been stolen, altered to increase the amount and made out to people the residents had never heard of. Police, who are still investigating the thefts, gave these further details:

An officer from a police department in Pennsylvania told a Lake Drive resident that a male tried to cash a fraudulent check using a phony Connecticut identification card “that had all of the victim’s information on it,” Darien police said. The man told Darien police on Feb. 7 that in addition to the call from police in Pennsylvania, his bank told him about a fraudulent phone transaction, Darien police said.

A shopper at Trader Joe’s put down her wallet when she was getting her shopping list out of it, then forgot about the wallet — which was stolen, resulting in her bank cards being used. Darien police gave this account of the incident:

The woman called police at 1:09 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 1, before she left the store at 436 Post Road. Police spoke to her there. She said that she’d put the wallet on a food display, then at checkout realized it was missing.

Police: Woman, 26, Accused of Stealing Paychecks for Woodway Club Employees

A 26-year-old woman has just been arrested on larceny and identity theft charges after employee paychecks were stolen at Woodway Country Club just over a year ago, and her bank account was used to cash the stolen checks, police said. Darien police gave this account of the incident and investigation, including accusations not proven in court:

Several paychecks and some Amazon gift cards were missing in the theft at the country club on Hoyt Street, reported to police on Dec. 16, 2020. Darien police detectives watched video surveillance records showing “the suspect and vehicle used in the incident,” the police news release said. The news release didn’t directly say the suspect was Marleny Nunez of Perry Street in Stamford, the woman they arrested on Sunday.
