Darien Honors Old Glory at Flag Day Ceremony at Town Hall

Darien’s annual Flag Day ceremony honored the nation’s flag Tuesday in front of Town Hall. Here’s what the ceremony looked like on a sunny, breezy afternoon:

(Jim Cameron contributed these photos.)

From Monuments and Ceremonies Commission Chairman Phil Kraft’s prepared comments for the ceremony:
A flag may be a flimsy bit of printed gauze, or a beautiful banner of finest silk. Its intrinsic value may be trifling or great; but its real value is beyond price, for it is a precious symbol of all that we and our comrades have worked for and lived for, and died for––a free nation of free people, true to the faith of the past, devoted to the ideals and practice of Justice, Freedom, and Democracy.

From the anonymous poem, “I Am Your Flag”:
I am the symbol of the living America,

the badge of its greatness,

the emblem of its destiny.

Second stanza of the poem:
I am faith.

The Monuments and Ceremonies Commission will hold our annual Flag Day Observance at the Veterans Memorial Circle at Town Hall at 5 p.m., Tuesday, June 14.  All are invited to bring their old, weathered flags.

Members of the VFW will accept the old and used flags for proper disposal at a later date, and have a brief flag ceremony, lowering an old flag and raising a new one. The Monuments & Ceremonies Commission urges all citizens to please take a look at their flags and think about putting up a new one if theirs is tattered and worn. In the event of inclement weather, a representative of the VFW will be at Town Hall to receive old flags at the time of the ceremony.
