George Brady “Sandy”” Gordon died Thursday, April 28 at home. Sandy was born May 12, 1945, in Kansas City, Mo. He grew up in Darien, doing what he loved most, sailing the Atlantic waters in the family sailboat “Genie.” He received his bachelor’s degree from Saint Lawrence University in 1963 and his law degree in 1974 from The University of Alabama School of Law. He was a retired captain of the United States Army and a veteran of the Vietnam War, receiving the Purple Heart and Bronze Star with “V” for Valor for his service.

Muriel (Cissie) Wakeman, 97, a longtime resident of Darien, died on April 29 at her home. Born May 2, 1918, she was the daughter of Frank C. and Martha Swindells Evitts. She grew up in Stratford and attended the University of Connecticut at Storrs and the University of Bridgeport before earning an AA degree from Edgewood Park College in New York. After college she worked as a journalist at The Fairfield News, where she met her husband, Norman Burr Wakeman. She later served as clerk of probate in Stratford.

Michael Francis Taylor, 26, of Darien died unexpectedly on Saturday, April 30, 2016. Michael, known to friends and family as Mike, was the son of Annmarie (Squatrito) and Francis Taylor of Darien. He was raised in Darien and was a graduate of Darien High School in 2008 and Villanova University in 2012. In addition to his mother and father he is survived by his sister, Kathryn E. Taylor of Darien and many aunts, uncles and cousins living across the country. Michael was kind, witty, adventurous, sincere and generous and will be greatly missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Aurora Dorothy Wheeler, 91, of Mystic and formerly of Darien, passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by family on Wednesday, April 27. She is survived by her husband, Malcolm F. “Mac” Wheeler. An active businesswoman and well-known hostess in Darien and Newport, R.I., Dottie Wheeler (as she was known) lived most recently in Mystic at StoneRidge with Malcolm, her husband of 66 years. Dottie Wheeler was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of Andrew Anastopoulos and Yolande (Cardullo) Anastopoulos. In the 1930s, they moved Dottie (with her brothers, William and Vincent) to the family home on Pyrgos, Greece.

Curtis Tredwell Dwyer of Darien and Lawrence, N.Y., a teacher and father, died on April 27, surrounded by his family. He was the son of the late John Charles McCarthy and Sheila Browne McCarthy of Lawrence, N.Y. A graduate of The Gunnery School, he received his bachelor’s degree from Trinity College and master’s degree from Manhattanville College. He is survived by his two children, Casey Dwyer of Philadelphia and Madeline Dwyer of Darien; his sister, Winifred Post, of San Francisco; and his brother, Robert McCarthy, of Safety Harbor, Fla. A small service for family and friends is planned for late May. In lieu of flowers, donations to Mercy Hospital, Rockville Center, N.Y. would be appreciated.

MacDonald “Mac” Osland, 89, a longtime resident of Darien, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at Stamford Hospital. Born on Oct. 19, 1926 in New Rochelle, NY, he was the son of the late Ivind and Melinda Osland. Mac graduated from Stamford High School, Class of 1948 and J. M. Wright Technical School in 1950. Mac enlisted in the United States Navy at the age of 17 and served as a carpenter’s mate in the Seabees during World War II, where he saw extensive action at Okinawa in the Pacific supporting American operations against the Japanese.

Renee (Sidler) Davis, 85, of Black Rock (formerly of Stamford), died peacefully at home on Wednesday, April 20. She was born in Basel, Switzerland on May 14, 1930 to Ida and Alois Sidler, one of three children. The family divided their time between homes in Basel and the Swiss Alps. Renee traveled widely as a young adult, working as a governess for families in Geneva, Switzerland; London; Spain; and for legendary film star Madeleine Carroll in Darien. She ultimately settled in Stamford, where she married the love of her life, the late Moses L. Davis, in 1957.

Gina Marie Senese English, age 49 of Fairfield, beloved wife of Darren John English for 23 years, died on Sunday, April 17, at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital after a courageous two-year battle with cancer.  

Born in Norwalk, the daughter of Alfredo J. Senese Jr., and Jean (DeFlorio) Senese of Darien, Gina graduated from Darien High School, Class of 1984, earned her bachelor’s degree in fashion design at the American University of London and Master’s degree in education from the University of Bridgeport. She loved children and worked as a special education teacher for the Darien school system, until her illness required her to stop. Gina had a passion for travel, art and cooking but above all, she was a dedicated mother and wife. In addition to her husband and parents, Gina is also survived by her children; Tyler Matthew English and Hayley Elizabeth English of Fairfield, and a brother Michael Senese of Darien, mother-in-law Mary Correnty English, brothers- and sisters-in-law David and Maria English, Dona Moseley and David Sierman, Louis and Dale DeRosa, Dean English, and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

John Fiske Hartley, 86, died peacefully on April 7 at Piper Shores Retirement Community. 

John was born in Medford, Mass. in 1929 to Noble Munroe and Ethel Fiske Hartley.  He lived in Portsmouth and Cincinnati, Ohio, and Arlington, Mass., where he graduated from Arlington High School. He received a bachelor’s degree from Colgate University in 1952, and a master’s from the Middlebury Language School in 1953. John taught French at The Choate School and then served in the U.S. Army for two years in peacetime Korea.  He started his career with the Travelers Insurance Company in New York and New Jersey.  During this time, John often traveled to Binghamton, N.Y. to visit his parents.

Louise Pauline Dunn, 93, a Stamford resident for many years, passed away on March 27, 2016. She was born October 10, 1922 in Newport, R.I. to Chester and Pauline Ober, and later moved to Darien. She graduated from Darien High School and Endicott College in Beverly, Mass. Louise worked in human resources at the Stamford Hospital for 32 years, when she retired to travel the world with her husband Edward. They were avid gardeners and boaters.
