Corruption across cultures and over time will be the topic of the third talk in the Darien Community Association’s Winter Global Series, “China’s Global Reach: Challenge and Change Under Xi Jinping.” — an announcement from the Darien Community Association

It will take place at the Darien Community Association at 10 a.m., Friday, Jan. 24.  (Please note the change to Friday morning is for this one event only). Yuen Yuen Ang is a political scientist and China specialist at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Her second book, “China’s Gilded Age: The Paradox of Economic Boom and Vast Corruption,” to be published in May, will be the topic of the Friday, Jan.

The opening lecture of this year’s Darien Community Association 2020 Academic Lecture Series on Global Issues, “China’s Global Reach,” begins Thursday, Jan. 9 at 10 a.m.

James Millward, professor of intersocietal history at the Walsh School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University will speak on “Concentration Camps, Sinicizing Religion and China’s New Assimilationism.”

Professor Millward’s specialties include the Qing Empire; the silk road; Eurasian lutes and music in history, and historical and contemporary Xinjiang. He also follows and comments on current issues regarding the Uyghurs and PRC ethnicity policy and is an affiliated professor in the Master Oficial en Estudios de Asia Oriental at the University of Granada, Spain. Millward has served on the boards of the Association for Asian Studies (China and Inner Asia Council) and the Central Eurasian Studies Society, where he was president in 2010. Millward is the series editor for the “Silk Roads” book series published by Chicago University Press.

Kevin Peraino, veteran foreign correspondent, will discuss the fall of Nationalist China and the triumph of Mao Zedong’s Communist forces in 1949 on Wednesday, May 23, 2018, at the Darien Men’s Association. “It was an extraordinary political revolution that shapes East Asian politics to this day,” says Peraino. — an announcement from the Darien Men’s Association
“The events led to decades of friction with Communist China, a U.S. commitment to Taiwan, and the wars in Korea and Vietnam.”
Drawing on Chinese and Russian sources, plus CIA documents, he reveals what happened through the eyes of the key players: Mao, Truman, Secretary of State Acheson, Congressman Walter Judd and Madame Chiang Kai-shek. Peraino’s latest book is titled A Force So Swift: Mao, Truman and the Birth of Modern China, 1949. The talk will start at 10:45 a.m. and is open to the public. DMA meetings are held at the Darien Community Association, 274 Middlesex Road, Darien.
