A 53-year-old Darien woman was charged Saturday with driving while under the influence of alcohol after police went to the scene of a three-vehicle accident on Middlesex Road.

Police described the matter with this account (including accusations not proven in court):

At 4:45 p.m. the accident occurred on Middlesex Road at its intersection with Noroton Avenue. The woman was traveling east when her Jeep hit a car driven by a 17-year-old Darien boy who stopped for the traffic light. The woman told police she thought the light was green.

Somehow a third car was involved in the accident. Police didn’t have details on how it was involved. No one was injured.

The officer who spoke with the woman smelled alcohol coming from inside the Jeep and asked her if she’d been drinking. She said she hadn’t, but when she was directed to take field sobriety tests, she didn’t pass them.

She was charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol and given breath tests. The first showed a blood-alcohol level of 0.11; the second, 0.10. The legal limit is 0.08.

The woman was later released after posting a $250 bond and is to appear April 26 in state Superior Court in Stamford.
