A burglar first smashed the electric meter on an outside wall of a home on Highfield Lane at about 5:30 p.m., Saturday and then forced his way through a door to get in — but an elderly resident inside saw him then run away from the house, police said.
Police gave this further account:
The elderly resident, a 79-year-old woman, told police that power was suddenly cut to the house, and she heard a loud crash. When she went to see what was wrong, she saw through a front window a male running away.
The only description of the male that she could give police was that he was wearing a light-colored top. She didn’t see a vehicle. The woman thinks the burglar may have been in the front foyer briefly before running off.
If the burglar wanted to prevent the house’s burglar alarm from going off, cutting the electricity didn’t work: It alerted the alarm company anyway, and police were alerted at 5:48 p.m.
When police arrived at the scene, the house was dark, unlike all the neighboring homes, and they saw the front door was wide open, with evidence that it had been forced open, perhaps kicked in — the frame and lock were damaged.

Police asked neighbors if they knew anything of the incident, but no one had any information.
A similar incident appears to have taken place in Stamford, a police spokesman said.
According to a report in the Stamford Advocate, a smash-and-grab burglar broke into several businesses on High Ridge Road early in the morning of Nov. 22 and then more later. Stamford police recently released a surveillance video showing the burglar. Nine businesses were victimized.
