A burglar first smashed the electric meter on an outside wall of a home on Highfield Lane at about 5:30 p.m., Saturday and then forced his way through a door to get in — but an elderly resident inside saw him then run away from the house, police said. Police gave this further account:

The elderly resident, a 79-year-old woman, told police that power was suddenly cut to the house, and she heard a loud crash. When she went to see what was wrong, she saw through a front window a male running away. The only description of the male that she could give police was that he was wearing a light-colored top. She didn’t see a vehicle.

A 10:15 a.m. burglar alarm on Saturday, Oct. 8 alerted Darien police to a house on the 100 block of Long Neck Point Road, where officers found signs of items disturbed in two rooms.

Police as of Tuesday had no information on whether any items were taken in the break-in. They gave this account of the incident:

When the alarm company contacted police, they had already called the homeowner, who said nobody was supposed to be at the house. Officers already in the area quickly arrived, and as they approached the house they saw a window screen on the ground and the lower portion of a window broken out. They advised police dispatch, and other officers arrived and surrounded the house, in case any burglar or burglars were still inside.
