On July 5, just after the Independence Day holiday, an employee at the YWCA of Darien/Norwalk noticed a pouch for petty cash, with $56 in it, was missing from a locked drawer. Later, the employee saw pry marks around the door to her office.

Darien police provided these further details in an announcement:

The YWCA employee initially assumed the money had been taken by some co-worker, and tried to locate the money based on that assumption (a police announcement didn’t provide more details about that).

Police were not called until July 8, after the employee noticed the pry marks on her office door, and noticed that the door lock seemed to be damaged.

When police were called to the YW offices at 49 Old Kings Hwy. North, they noticed more pry marks around more doors. Nothing else was reported missing. Detectives went to the scene to search for further evidence.
