Phyllis Meyer, 97, died March 1. She was buried in a private graveside service next to her husband, Herbert, in Spring Grove Cemetery.

She was born in Kalamazoo, Mich. on June 30, 1919, grew up in Kalamazoo and graduated from Western Michigan University in 1941. She married Herbert H. Meyer and moved to Darien, where she was active in many different organizations.

She served as President of the Holmes School Parents Group and the Darien Council of School Parents. She was also very active for years in the Darien Community Association holding many different offices and serving as president from 1965 to 1967.

She participated on the Advisory Committee on Planning for the Future of Darien in the late 1960s and early 1970s and was a member of Representative Town Meeting and the League of Women Voters. She and her husband were among the founding members of the Country Club of Darien and belonged to the Noroton Presbyterian Church.

She moved to Tampa from Darien in 1973 when her husband joined the faculty of the University of South Florida.

Her service continued once in Tampa. Her activities included participation in the Lutz, Land O’ Lakes Women’s Club, the Forest Hills Garden Circle, the Original New Tampa Grads, and the Women’s Club of the University of South Florida where she served as president from 1976 to 1977.

From 1992 to 1994 she served on the Customer Advisory Council of the United States Postal Service. Phyllis loved to play bridge and was a member of a large number of different bridge groups which resulted in many wonderful friendships, both in Darien and Tampa. Other interests included crafts, especially needlepoint and knitting, and reading.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert, and is survived her brother, Carl Cooper of Novi, Mich., her daughters, Marilyn Dolcetti (Daniel) of Darien and Janet Hall (and her husband, Robert) of Temple Terrace, Fl., six grandsons and eight great grandchildren.

Phyllis was buried next to her husband in a private graveside service at Spring Grove Cemetery in Darien. Memorial donations may be made to the DCA Scholarship Fund, 274 Middlesex Road, Darien, CT 06820.
