Matthew Galbraith, a resident of Darien, a former resident of Riverside, and a former 40-year resident of Barrington, RI, passed away on Monday, Jan. 25, 2016 in Darien.
Born on Nov. 23, 1927 in New York, N.Y., he was the son of the late Rose Marie Howes Galbraith and Matthew W. Galbraith and was raised in Millburn, N.J.
Matthew graduated from Millburn High School in Millburn, N.J. and received a B.S. degree from Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Penn. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II.
He retired as senior vice president of Metropolitan Life Insurance where he spent his entire career. He was also a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. Matthew was president of the Providence Chamber of Commerce; chairman of the board of AAA of New England and Chair of the United Way of Rhode Island.

He is survived by his wife, Susan Herbig Galbraith of Darien; three children, Susan Galbraith Johnson of South Orange, N.J.; Peter W. Galbraith of Manhattan and Steven M. Galbraith of Darien, and five grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Harriette Allison of Hurricane, W.V.
A private memorial service will be scheduled in the spring.
