In the face of what appears to be the inevitable legalization of “recreational” marijuana in Connecticut and other states throughout the U.S., we require more information across multiple disciplines in order to anticipate and manage the social consequences and costs of the burgeoning marijuana industry.

Join us in the Louise Parker Berry Community Room at 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 15 for a discussion on changing laws and social policy on marijuana. Attorney Matthew Maddox of New Canaan is the presenter.

This presentation will provide information about marijuana laws, including some of the risks and potential costs that we are facing as marijuana use and marketing becomes legalized and more accepted.

Discussion will include marijuana’s longstanding medical history and recent experience in Colorado and Washington related to distribution regulations as well as tax revenue.

It will also touch upon some of the chemical and neurological considerations that we should understand about marijuana’s impact upon the developing adolescent brain, addictive behavior and as a gateway to other behaviors.

About the presenter

Maddox is a trial attorney who dedicates the bulk of his practice to litigating civil and criminal matters. He has represented thousands of individuals and their families in criminal cases and serious injury cases.

Matthew was admitted to the Connecticut Bar in 1991 after graduating with a Juris Doctor from Suffolk University Law School. He was the co-founder of the Ram Council, a New Canaan High School student-run organization for the advancement of safe and healthy practices for Fairfield County youth.

He has spoken on panels and to audiences throughout Connecticut about underage substance abuse. Most recently, Matthew established Informed Ascent, LLC, a company whose mission is to bring reliable data and information to families about topics that impact their health and their future. Matthew lives in New Canaan with his daughter and wife.
