You can see this Abominable Snowman outdoor Christmas decoration at 108 Gardner St., near the intersection with Maple Street, and, yes, we think it’s the biggest decoration in town. Certainly, at least at a private residence.

Abominable Snowman

Abominable final

Careful: He’s a mite cranky with his tooth that way.

It appeared to us to be between 15 and 20 feet high, and it seems to reach up to about half-way up the second floor windows of the house it looms in front of, but a Web page of the Hammacher Schlemmer catalog says it exclusively sells the monster decoration, and it’s only 15 feet high.

Which is big enough.

The monster is a character in the 1964 Christmas special classic “Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer.”

According to Hammacher Schlemmer, “Bumble” is its name: “Feared by all in Christmas Town until Rudolph’s friend (and aspiring dentist) Hermey the Elf extracted his teeth, now the reformed yeti stands harmlessly on a lawn, where his enormous size and five internal light bulbs draw attention to holiday decorations and elicit astonished stares from passersby.”

If you know of a larger Christmas decoration in Darien, public or private, please let us know (even better, send us a picture: dave@darienite.com). We’ve heard of larger ones elsewhere, but we have a feeling this is as big as they come in these parts, at least for a residence (on the other hand …).

There’s a pretty small home nearby, which appears to be only about 50 percent larger than Mr. Bumble Abominable.
