Darien has been invaded by a second abominable snow monster, along with a giant reindeer, both spotted in front of a house on Buttonwood Lane.

Care is advised when driving with small children past either the house at 83 Buttonwood Lane or the one at 108 Gardner St., where a 15-foot-tall abominable snow monster was first spotted in town: They may make sudden exclamations which could distract a driver. (“They” being the children, that is — not the snow monsters. If the snow monsters make sudden exclamations, step on the gas.)

Darien police are aware of the presence of giant inflatable monsters in town. In fact, it was Police Commission member Tom Joyce who alerted Darienite.com to the existence of the Buttonwood abominable.

As previously reported, the Hammacher Schlemmer catalog says it exclusively sells the inflatable monster decoration, based on the character “Bumble” in the classic 1964 Christmas special, “Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” On Buttonwood Lane, the reindeer decoration also appears to be 15 feet high and seems to be Rudolf from the same TV program.

By ancient, honored (and pretty much arbitrary) journalistic tradition, one instance is unique, a second is a possible coincidence but three similar instances constitute a trend — so if you spot another giant inflatable Christmas decoration like the Goliath on Gardner or the Behemoths on Buttonwood, we urge you to report it immediately to the proper authority: dave@darienite.com. Do not delay: Christmas is almost upon us.

“Hey kids, see anything unusual around here? … Like an ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN or GIANT REINDEER?”
