Darien residents (not businesses) can drop off household hazardous waste this Saturday, Sept. 12 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Norwalk High School (here’s a map).

The collection day is one of several scheduled for the rest of this year and open to residents of Darien, Norwalk, New Canaan, Greenwich, Stamford, Westport, Weston and Wilton.

Household hazardous waste includes items from the following common household areas and will be accepted during specified hazardous waste collection days.

  • Garage: Gasoline, auto care products, oil-based paints or alkyd paints, stains, thinners, spray paints, etc.
  • Garden: Insect killer weed killer, fungicides (rose dust), chemical fertilizers, garden lime, etc.
  • Household: Cleaners, polishes, mercury thermometers, pet care products, pool chemicals, etc.

 Items Not Accepted 

Items that will not be accepted during specified hazardous waste collection days include:

  • Ammunition / flares or explosives: Contact the Norwalk Police Department at (203) 854-3000 for information on how to properly discard these items
  • Asbestos: Disposal of this material is regulated by the Connecticut Department of Public Health
  • Cooking oil – Norwalk Residents only – bring to Norwalk Transfer Station
  • Electronics: Norwalk residents only bring items to the Norwalk Transfer Station
  • Motor Oil & AntifreezeNorwalk residentsonly -bring to Norwalk Transfer Station
  • Medical and biological waste
  • Radioactive material
  • CFLS/Fluorescent Bulbs: Unbroken Bulbscan be disposed at Home Depot
