Three Florida men who committed “several ‘smash and grab’ type car burglaries” in Darien in the past week were arrested Thursday night, Darien police announced late Friday morning.

Darien police, who made the arrest in West Haven with the help of police in that community, gave this account (with accusations not proven in court):

The men went into vehicles in parking lots in Darien that had purses and other items visible through the windows.

Proceeds from some of the burglaries were found in the West Haven area, and Darien police identified the vehicle that suspects were using for the break-ins in town and for crimes in “several other cities and states.”

On Thursday, Darien and West Haven police “conducted a focused surveillance” at several locations in West Haven, and at 11:30 p.m., a West Haven officer saw the vehicle police were looking for as it rolled down Elm Street in that town. It had been rented from a car rental business located at Fort Lauderdale Airport.

Officers arrested three Fort Lauderdale, Fla. men who were in the vehicle and found “a significant amount of stolen cash, credit/gift cards, jewelry,burglary tools, a stolen license plate, and proceeds from burglaries that occurred in adjoining states.”

“This investigation remains active and officers are exploring possible connections to other incidents as well,” the Darien police announcement said.

Police arrested Kenton Chance, 31; Oliver Chance, 24, and Jerevonte Bray, 18 and, as of this morning, each was held on $100,000 bond. All three men are scheduled to appear Sept. 14 in state Superior Court in Stamford, and each was charged with

  • three counts of third-degree burglary
  • conspiracy to commit third-degree burglary
  • possession of burglar tools
  • two counts of sixth-degree “larceny by possession
  • one count of fourth-degree larceny
  • three counts of credit card theft

During the past week the Darien Police Department has investigated several “smash and grab” type car burglaries.  The suspects targeted vehicles in parking lots that had purses and other valuables visible inside.  Through investigation it was determined that proceeds from several of these burglaries were being recovered in the West Haven, CT area.  Darien officers identified the vehicle the suspects were using not only for the crimes in Darien, but in several other cities and states.

On 9/10/2015 Detectives from the Darien Police Department in collaboration with the West Haven Police Street Crime Unit, conducted a focused surveillance on several West Haven locations.  At approximately 22:30 hrs., a West Haven police officer observed the suspect vehicle traveling on Elm St. in West Haven.  The vehicle was stopped and the three occupants were detained.    Inside of the vehicle officers located a significant amount of cash, stolen credit/gift cards, jewelry, burglary tools, a stolen license plate, and proceeds from burglaries that occurred in adjoining states.  The three subjects were then subsequently arrested by Darien Detectives.

The occupants of the vehicle were identified as Oliver Chance DOB 3/23/1991 of 2815 NW 8 CT Ft. Lauderdale, FL; Kenton Chance DOB 6/26/1984 of 3681 SW 12 PL Ft. Lauderdale, FL; and Jerevonte Bray DOB 4/4/1997 of 451 NW 23rd Ave Apt. #1 Ft. Lauderdale, FL.  The vehicle they were in was a 2015 Ford Explorer color white which had been rented by Oliver Chance from a “Fox Rent A Car” at the Ft. Lauderdale Airport.  All three subjects were transported to Darien Police Headquarters and were charged with the following:

  • 3 Counts of Burglary 3rd Degree
  • Conspiracy To Burglary 3rd Degree
  • Possession of Burglar Tools
  • 2 Counts Larceny 6th Degree By Possession
  • 1 Count Larceny 4th Degree
  • 3 Counts of Credit Card Theft

The three subjects have very extensive criminal histories, are multi-state offenders, and are convicted felons.  It was also discovered Both Bray and Kenton are “wanted persons” in different states.  The three men remain in the custody of the Darien Police Department and are being held on $100,000.00 bonds.  They are scheduled to be arraigned in Stamford Superior Court on Monday September 14, 2015.  This investigation remains active and officers are exploring possible connections to other incidents as well.
