Born Jan. 5, 1933 in Middletown, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Dr. Harry F. Pohlmann and Mabel Myers Pohlmann.

Gracie graduated from Smith College in 1953, then received her MBA degree from Harvard/Radcliffe.  She was an active volunteer in the Darien community and schools.

A member of the Smith College Club of Darien/New Canaan, Gracie devoted over 40 years working as a volunteer for the Smith College Club of Darien/New Canaan’s Annual Used Book Sale, raising money for scholarships at Smith.

She adored her time spent each winter with her co-volunteers and Smith alums, lugging countless tomato boxes filled with books to the basement of Waveny Mansion then sorting, pricing and packing away until the doors opened at the sale every spring. Passionate about her college and the books; Gracie was known as the “Essays and Anthologies” Smithie.

In addition to her love for education and her alma mater, Gracie loved travelling with her husband, Rich, from France to Australia to Egypt to the Caribbean and places in between; their favorite spot to which they returned many times was St. Barts — a little bit of France with croissant, beaches and sun.

______________

She believed in seeing the good in people and was a champion for the underdog, which explained the various shelter dogs she adopted and loved so fiercely. She loved her family and friends dearly; her most favorite times of all were those spent with friends and family gathered on the front porch of her summer house, Greyrock, in Twin Lakes, Pa.

She is survived by two daughters, Maddy Jahn Bacher (Tom) of Green, OH and Jessy Jahn Sullivan (John) of Dublin, Ohio; and four grandsons: Joby Bacher (fiancée Becca McNulty) of Tallmadge, Ohio; Tommy Bacher of Green, Ohio; Colin Sullivan and Malachy Sullivan of Dublin, Ohio.

Our family would like to thank the staff at Olentangy Trail for their loving care of Mom in the last year and a half. We would like to thank the staff at Capital City Hospice for their gentle guidance and support. Lastly, we are so grateful to her loving and devoted caregiver, Anna, for all the years she watched over Mom as both caregiver and friend.

A small chapel service for the family and friends at the Inn will be held on Sunday. A celebration of her life will be held later in July with a gathering of friends and family at her Twin Lakes home. Interment will be at Wallkill Cemetery in Middletown, N.Y. in July.

In lieu of flowers, any acts of kindness in Gracie’s memory or a donation in her name to The Smith Fund at Smith College, 33 Elm St., Northampton, MA 01063, would be appreciated.
