Family, friends, and community lost a great man on Jan. 28. George Michael Brookner, 79, of Norwalk died peacefully surrounded by his family at Norwalk Hospital.

George was a 1954 graduate of Pittsfield High School in Pittsfield, MA, he graduated from Syracuse University in 1958, later receiving an MBA from Sacred Heart University.

While at Syracuse, he was on the varsity baseball and swim teams. A veteran of the US Air Force, he held a pilot’s license. He worked in the aerospace industry for the Link Division of General Dynamics and for Pitney Bowes. Most recently, he had retired from Euro Post.

Over the course of his successful career as an engineer, George received patents for over 50 designs and inventions. However, the accomplishments he was most proud of were his daughter, Leah and grandson, Smith George Brookner.

Known to those close to him for his patience, kindness, and generosity, George was very active in the Darien Senior Men’s club. He was an avid tennis player and golfer.

Mr. Brookner was predeceased by his parents, Celia and Harry Brookner and a sister, Edith Kamienski. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Linda. Also surviving him are his daughter, Professor Leah Brookner, and grandson, Smith George Brookner, both of Portland, OR. Additional survivors include his brother, Howard Brookner (Sandra), nieces Joelle Brookner and Jaclyn Sabin, all of Williamstown, MA, nephew Scott Kaminski, of Pittsfield, MA and several great nieces and nephews.

Disposition of ashes will occur at a later date with a private memorial service.
