Eunice Thomas, 90, Nurse-Teacher at Middlesex, Helped Found Labor Union Chapter

Eunice Mehan Thomas, a native of Stamford, died on Thursday, May 19 at The Bristal Assisted Living facility in Armonk, N.Y. at the age of 90. She was the only child of Anthony and Jennie Czescik Mehan.

ObitEunice attended the Holy Name School and Stamford High School, graduating in 1942. She attended the University of Connecticut for two years prior to transferring to Cornell University-New York Hospital where she received her B.S. degree in nursing.

While at Cornell she was a member of the United States Cadet Nurse Corps. She continued her studies in a Columbia University graduate program in public health.

Active in the field of community health for over fifty years, Eunice was a staff nurse for the Greenwich Public Health Nursing Service, a nurse-teacher in the Darien School System working most of the time at Middlesex Junior High School, a geriatric case manager at Connecticut Community Care and a health coordinator for the Child Care Center of Stamford.

Eunice was one of a group of nurse activists instrumental in unionizing Darien’s non-certified employees. As a geriatric case manager, she also received a citation from the governor of Connecticut naming her as an outstanding older worker.

She was active in the League of Women Voters, American Association of University Women, Cornell University-NYH Alumnae Association, The National Organization for Women and Planned Parenthood.

Joseph H. Thomas III, her husband of 63 years, predeceased her on Sept. 9, 2015. She is survived by two sons, Brett and his wife Kathleen; Kent and his wife Susan; and by three grandchildren, Alexander, Zachary and Jennie.

Donations may be made to Alzheimer’s Association on her behalf.

Her family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday, June 12 from 12 noon to 1 p.m. at the Bosak Funeral Home, 453 Shippan Ave., Stamford, with a memorial service to be celebrated at 1 p.m. Burial will be private.
