We are offering tickets to this performance for a reduced price of $10 each if purchased before Oct. 1.

Thanks to the Stamford Symphony, our Music Department is able to keep 100 percent of the proceeds of our ticket sales to help to fund music programs for our students.
This concert is dedicated to 100 years of LeonardBernstein’s music, which is also our Music Department’s 2018-19 Curricular Focus Theme.
The Oct. 14 concert begins at 3 pm and provides a wonderful opportunity for our students and their families to visit the Symphony and explore the magnificent music of Bernstein, Copland, and Tower, at the Palace Theatre, 61 Atlantic Street, in downtown Stamford. Virtuoso musician, Pavel Vinnitsky will be the featured clarinet soloist on this concert.
Please join us in the Upper Lobby before the concert, at 2 PM, for MusiKids, a 40 minute, interactive music education experience that will help children understand the afternoon’s performance and provide an opportunity to meet one of the orchestra’s talented musicians.
Also available is the pre-concert Behind-the-Baton program, a 30 minute program beginning at 2 PM, for older children (13+) and adults, presented by the conductor Edward Cumming, in the concert hall.

Meet Edward Cumming
Edward Cumming is Director of Orchestral Activities at The Hartt School, in Hartford, Connecticut. Before this appointment, he was Music Director of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, hailed for its remarkable artistic growth during his tenure. The announcement came after a two-year search process, involving nearly 300 applicants from around the world.
Before coming to Hartford, he was Resident Conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, where he stepped in on short notice for music director Mariss Jansons to conduct a program of which the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette wrote, “some conductors could not do as well, even with months to prepare.” As Resident Conductor of the Florida Orchestra, he conducted the platinum recording of the “Star Spangled Banner,” with Whitney Houston and the Florida Orchestra, for Super Bowl XXV.
In Europe, Mr. Cumming has led orchestras in Spain, the Czech Republic, Serbia, Canada, Italy, and the BBC Ulster Orchestra in Belfast. He has conducted the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, the Israel Sinfonietta Be’er Sheva and, on short notice, Schoenberg’s Pelleas und Melisande with the Filarmónica de Bogotá.
Throughout the United States, he has been a guest conductor with many ensembles, including the Buffalo Philharmonic, Boston Pops, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
As a collaborator, he has performed with violinists Sarah Chang, Stefan Jackiw and Joshua Bell; pianists Horacio Gutierrez and Emmanuel Ax; cellist Yo Yo Ma; trumpeter Doc Severinson; folk singer/songwriter, James Taylor, and Ray Charles.
As an educator, he has taught at colleges all over the country, including Yale University, University of South Florida, and Pacific University. He was Music Director of the nationally acclaimed Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra, invited twice to the biennial National Youth Orchestra Festival, and has conducted the All-Eastern Honors Orchestra, comprised of the finest high school orchestral musicians from the northeastern United States.
Mr. Cumming has distinguished himself for his remarkable ability to connect directly with listeners. In Hartford, he attracted hundreds of people for his pre-concert talks. With the Florida Orchestra, his Champagne/Coffee concerts were wildly popular, in large part due to the maestro’s conversational style, inviting his audiences to listen to music in new and inventive ways.
He holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Master’s and Doctorate from Yale University, where he studied conducting with Otto-Werner Mueller. In 2010, he received an Honorary Doctorate from Trinity College. A native of Oakland, California, he lives in Hartford with his wife, Elizabeth Vandeventer.
Meet Pavel Vinnitsky
Pavel Vinnitsky was appointed principal clarinetist of the Stamford Symphony in 2013. An avid orchestral musician, he regularly performs with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, Metropolitan Opera, the Philadelphia Orchestra, Chicago Symphony, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, the American Symphony and the Orchestra of St. Luke’s.
As chamber musician, Pavel Vinnitsky is a founding member of ClariAnna Duo that includes his wife, concert pianist Anna Vinnitsky. He also performed with the Met Chamber Players during their Carnegie Hall series as well as with the Wind Soloists of New York, the St. Luke’s Chamber Ensemble, the International Contemporary Ensemble. He is on the artists roster of many international chamber music festivals.
A dedicated educator, Pavel Vinnitsky has conducted master-classes at universities and music schools nationwide. He is on the faculty at NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. His discography includes recordings for Deutsche Grammophon, New World and Bridge Records labels, numerous broadcasts on WQXR, CBS, Israeli National TV and Bavarian Radio as well as major motion picture soundtracks.
Pavel Vinnitsky holds degrees in clarinet performance from Tel-Aviv University and Yale University School of Music.
