A credit card stolen in one of the two dozen recent motor vehicle burglaries in town was used at the Interstate 95 South rest stop in Darien, pointing to a second suspect in the recent thefts, Police Chief Duane Lovello says.

Lovello, speaking at the Darien Police Commission’s meeting last week, said the suspect, a man driving a vehicle, used one of the stolen credit cards “a short time” after it was stolen. Police have video surveillance records of the vehicle at the rest stop, he said.

Police as of Thursday, Aug. 20, applied for an arrest warrant for the man, who they were able to identify Lovello said.

Police don’t know of any connection between this man and Joel Mackinnon, 48, a Stamford homeless man who was arrested on the platform at Noroton Heights Railroad Station on the night when many of the thefts took place, the police chief said.

That arrest took place after Sgt. Thomas Moore saw a pickup truck stopped on the roadway of Patton Drive at 3 a.m. on Aug. 19, Lovello said. Mackinnon, found on the station platform, had on him items from a couple of the thefts from unlocked cars in the area. There were also two arrest warrants out for him, the chief said.

Police have said they don’t believe Mackinnon committed all of the recent motor vehicle burglaries.

No break-ins to vehicles have been reported — in all cases it appears the cars, trucks and SUVs were unlocked, police have said.
