Police say they had to tap on the car window at 1 a.m. Friday to awaken a driver who’s car was stopped — but running, and in gear — on the Post Road near Ledge Road.

The man was charged with driving while under the influence.

Darien police gave this further account (with accusations not proven in court) of the matter:

Police smelled a strong odor of alcohol inside the vehicle, a 2009 Volkswagen Jetta, and on the driver, Manuel Molina, a 27-year-old Bridgeport man. He did not pass field sobriety tests and couldn’t show police any registration or insurance documents for the vehicle.

A computer check showed the vehicle’s registration had been suspended, and a breath check of Molina’s blood at Police Headquarters showed it was over the 0.08 limit — 0.1484 at 2:19 a.m. and 0.1411 at 2:39 a.m.

Molina, of Black Rock Avenue in Bridgeport, was charged with driving while under the influence and driving with a vehicle with suspended registration. He later posted $250 bond and is scheduled to appear Oct. 5 in state Superior Court in Stamford.
