Will the last person leaving Darien please turn off the lights?
If anything more closes in or around town, they’ll start rolling up the sidewalks: The latest closures to be announced are a Friday night (Aug. 7) shutdown of Darien Library and a weeklong closure of the Darien Senior Activities Center (Aug. 17 to 21.)
You may have noticed the highway traffic or even in-town traffic lightening up, and you may have heard about the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles closing for next week to do a computer upgrade. A major paving project on Interstate 95 is also ongoing at night.
With more people on vacation than at just about any other time of the year, various institutions have picked this time to close up shop and hammer out some internal upgrades — or just go on vacation.

Darien Senior Activities Center
The Senior Activities Center closes the week after next — Aug. 17 to 21 — and reopens Monday, Aug. 24. From the senior center’s August newsletter (first page):
We will be closing for the week of Aug. 17 through Aug. 21 for some well needed heavy duty cleaning, instructors taking vacations, less extra special programs and August being generally a quiet month in the hamlet of Darien.
Darien Library: No Movie on Friday, Aug. 7
Darien Library will be shutting down at 6 p.m. on Friday, rather than the usual 9 p.m. That means no movie this Friday. The reason: Upgrades to the Louise Parker Berry Community Room (the auditorium). From the library website:
The Louise Parker Berry Community Room is getting an upgrade! We will be closing early and have no film on Friday, August 7th as we update our system. We’re bringing crisper picture and better sound quality, all to make your movie-watching experience the best it can be!
