Carol Pfeiffer (nee Quinn), 59, died peacefully at home on Oct. 17 after a ferocious battle with ovarian cancer.
Known by many as a global adventurer and skilled nurse, she devoted much of her life to helping others, doing so with a caring voice, kind temperament and quick wit.
Carol attended high school in Portsmouth, Va.
After graduating from University of Virginia Nursing School, she worked at the University of Virginia Hospital as an intensive care unit and pediatric intensive care unit nurse.
After marrying her husband Rick Pfeiffer, they moved to Rockville, Md. in 1982, where she worked for Shady Grove Adventist Hospital and Home Assistance, Inc.
In 1990, the family moved to Darien, and she worked as a post-surgical nurse while raising her young family. They then lived overseas for 9 years, in Bombay, Singapore, Hong Kong and England before returning to their home in Darien.

While living in Bombay, Carol served as the country director of Asia Emergency Assist helping with medical evacuations of foreigners. Returning to Connecticut in 2002, she resumed her nursing career at Stamford Hospital and was most recently an emergency room nurse for Metropolitan Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, Texas.
Wherever she lived, Carol was always active in the community, especially with the Boy Scouts of America. She volunteered countless hours in Singapore, Hong Kong, England and Connecticut, serving both the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. She watched both of her sons become Eagle Scouts and helped many other scouts advance through their ranks.
Moving to San Antonio in June 2012, they became members of Christ Episcopal Church where Carol became involved with the “Bad Girls” Bible Study Group.
She is survived by Rick Pfeiffer, her husband of almost 34 years, and her sons Charles Andrew (Chad) Pfeiffer, 28, of Daytona Beach, Fl. and William Quinn Pfeiffer, 23, of San Antonio. She is also survived by her mother, Annie Merle “Bobby” Quinn of Portsmouth, Va.; Bill Quinn of Portsmouth, Va. and David Michael Quinn of Columbus, Ohio. She leaves behind 19 nieces and nephews and seven sisters- and brothers-in-law, with whom she has always had a warm and loving relationship.
Her funeral service will be at Christ Episcopal Church on Oct. 24, 2016. Contributions can be made in her name to the American Cancer Society or your local Boy Scouts of America.
