Board of Ed Considers Whether to Approve $5,000 Gift for Ox Ridge School

A proposed $5,000 gift for Ox Ridge School from a fifth-grader’s family was discussed by the Board of Education at a recent meeting. But the board had some qualms.

Luke Forshaw, principal at Ox Ridge School, said that the school was considering using the gift to improve the library/media center through furniture or equipment upgrades. However, the Board of Ed disagreed with that idea, as they saw several problems in accepting the gift. First, there was no definitive plan for the gift. Although Forshaw said the donation was going to be used for the library, there was no set plan, such as what the school would be buying, when the school would buy it, or even how the school would be using the gift.

Milliken learned she had MS in 2006, and shared personal accounts of her journey as she came to grips with her diagnosis. Upon learning of her condition, she saw a need for a moment-based, authentic platform to show others what it was like to actually live with an illness. She started the online support forum, MyCounterpane, not only as a vehicle to share her own struggles, but also to stimulate conversation and inspire others to educate the public on MS and other illnesses through short movies.

Ox Ridge Elementary School students built rockets, wrote code, and constructed amazing structures last week as part of the second annual Maker Faire. The Maker Faire event at Ox Ridge is reflective of a larger movement happening across the nation. According to the MakerFaire.com website, a Maker Faire is an all-ages event that is “part science fair, part county fair, and part something entirely new.” Maker Faire participants come to show what they have made and share what they have learned. The Ox Ridge event was held in the Library Media Center and included a number of stations for computing and building. Speakers and experts in computer coding and robotics were invited to inspire and instruct students across all grades, according to Principal Luke Forshaw (pictured above with students).

Stolen Store Reward Cards and Suspicious Activity in Parklands Drive

Several stolen store reward cards and a Triple-A membership card were found Monday, May 8 in the parking lot of Parklands Office Park. The cards belonged to a Milford woman who told police that her purse had been stolen from an office building in Orange earlier the same day. The victim’s credit cards were used in Norwalk and online that day. A building manager for the office park at Parklands Drive  told police that between 5 and 5:30 p.m. that day, four suspicious people entered at least two offices in the building. (The office park now has one building in use, the other one is being torn down, to be replaced by a nursing home.)

Police are continuing to look into the matter, but they say they don’t know whether or not there’s a connection between the four people and the stolen cards.

Police found a prescription opioid tablet in a car after they stopped it for having a cracked windshield and windows that appeared to be tinted too darkly, Darien police said. Darien police gave this account (including accusations not proven in court):

At 7:45 a.m. on Tuesday, May 9 officers saw a green 2005 Nissan Altima with dark windows and windshield crack traveling on the Post Road at the Interstate 95 entrance near Exit 13. Police checked records and found that the license plate belonged to a Honda Civic, not the Nissan Altima. The driver — Tory Hinton, 32, of Fairfield Avenue in Stamford — said he had switched plates on his girlfriend’s car in order to take the Nissan to Stamford to be repaired. Hinton didn’t have registration or insurance papers for the car.

Out of 100 teams, only half — including the DHS team — passed the rigorous technical and safety inspection process to get on the track. The fuel cell car then was able to complete three laps, a distance of about three miles. However, due to technical issues, the team did not complete a valid run for placement.
