As part of an interdisciplinary unit, all Grade 3 students researched a country of their choice. Using the information from the research, students created presentations – slide shows, poster boards — to demonstrate a “Day In The Life” of a student living in that special place.

As a culminating activity, students put together a booth or station with artifacts and food to represent their country. They then shared their new learning with parents and staff (pictured above). Some of the countries represented included: Colombia, Jamaica, Japan, and France.

To prepare, students researched using a database called Culture Grams. In addition to the basic facts, students were able to view articles, videos, and recipes connected to their countries of study. They also researched using print material, including TIME for Kids magazine and non-fiction books.

“They learned how to use a variety of resources to do the research,” said Sherrie Lanier, the Library Media Specialist at Royle. She noted that geography and note-taking skills were also included. Lanier worked with teachers Jessica Nigri, Lauren Moore, and Samantha Mirabella on the project and event.

“We live in a global society so it is important for students to be exposed to other cultures,” said Lanier.
