Alan “Lanny” Openshaw, Jr., 70, passed away peacefully at his Marvin, N.C. home on Jan. 20.

Lanny grew up in Rowayton, always dear to him. He graduated from Brien McMahon High School and California Western University (USIU), San Diego, enjoying a semester traveling with professors through seven Asian countries.

Lanny was a state platform tennis champion ranked nationally within the top 10. He was a tennis pro at the Country Club of Darien and at Dorset Field Club in Vermont. Lanny became a real estate agent in Darien and broker in Union County, N.C.

In Union County, Lanny was a commissioner (for one year, chairman), a member of the Village of Marvin Planning Board and Town Council, and a founder of the boys high school lacrosse program. Lanny was recently acknowledged for his love of and tremendous contribution to the creation, development and ongoing improvements of Marvin’s Efird Park.

Lanny is survived by his wife of 32 years, Mary Openshaw; his sister, Nancy “Kai” Openshaw of Nashville; and children Heather Openshaw of Nashville, Kenneth Crowley of Denver, Laura Moon of Corte Madera, Ca., and Amos (an his wife, Samantha) Crowley III of Hunting Valley, Ohio; and five grandchildren.
