Police officers drew their guns to confront a burglar at the top of a staircase in a Darien home last month, and when he fled elsewhere in the house, according to the police report, they followed, not knowing if he was armed, too. The Dec. 15 incident, previously reported by Darienite.com and others, involved a number of police officers who were later thanked by a resident of the house in a letter to the department that we publish here (see below). Darien Police not only arrested the burglar, who was wearing a watch and gold chain owned by a resident of the house, and the burglar had stolen other items from the home and they found other items in his car, and they’ve been working to connect those items to other thefts in the area, according to the police account. Here’s the letter, which was brought up at a recent meeting of the Police Commission:

Burglars Take $20K in Jewelry, Property from Oak Crest Home

When a resident of an Oak Crest home stopped by the house at 7:30 p.m. Friday before heading off to join his family out of state, he discovered that the rear patio doors were wide open, Darien police were told. But he saw a good sign — a laptop was in plain view and it wasn’t taken. He thought that probably meant nothing was taken, and he left the house, never calling police. Apparently he didn’t check further, because bedrooms were ransacked and jewelry and other items were gone. In fact, the family gave police a preliminary estimate that $20,000 worth of their property had been stolen.

Attempt Made to Break into House on Littlebrook Road North

A break-in was attempted at a house on Little Brook Road North last Wednesday, Oct. 21, between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., when the homeowner saw pry marks on a damaged front door. The door was still locked when the homeowner discovered the pry marks, so it appears the burglar or burglars weren’t able to open the door to get inside the house in the southeast quarter of the town, a bit north of Tokeneke Road. Police asked around the neighborhood, but nobody else saw anything or said they had anything stolen. The incident occurred on the same day as a daytime burglary on Talmadge Hill Road at the far northern end of town.

Police suspect a burglary of a home Wednesday on Talmadge Hill Road (first reported, exclusively, by Darienite.com on Thursday) may be connected to other recent burglaries in Norwalk and New Canaan and possibly older ones in Darien. Police gave this account of the Talmadge Hill Road burglary:

Sometime between 9:30 a.m., when the husband and wife who live there left their home, and 10 a.m., entry was made into the home through an exterior garage door and forcing open an interior door between the garage and the rest of the house. The house has an alarm system, but it wasn’t on at the time. A jewelry box was taken from the master bedroom on the first floor, and an end table had been forced open. In a closet, a lockable fire box in a drawer of the end table was missing.

A burglary took place at a home on Talmadge Hill Road at the far northern end of town Wednesday in which a suspect leaving the scene dropped a safe, Police Chief Duane Lovello said. Lovello, who spoke at the Police Commission’s meeting on Wednesday, gave out very little information on the new case, but described police as being only “a couple of steps behind the suspect.” The police investigation is active, he said.
