A 26-year-old Watertown man who had been charged in 2022 with stealing payment card information from customers of a Verizon store in Darien had later failed to appear in court and was arrested again, Darien police said. Darien police provided this account, including accusations not proven in court:

In 2022, Darien police arrested the man, Joselito Rotger, on charges of identity theft and larceny after an investigation into two 2020 complaints from customers of the Verizon store that their credit card information had been stolen and used to buy various items.

Some of the items were bought on eBay and delivered to the address of Joselito Rotger, an employee at the store who had worked on transactions for the customers. Rotger had two court cases at state Superior Court in Stamford and at some point warrants were later issued charging him with failing to appear in court for each of the cases. A bail enforcement officer brought Rotger to Darien Police Headquarters on Jan. 16, where he was arrested on two charges of failure to appear in court.

Darien Woman Reports Identity Theft From a Credit Card and Other Online Accounts

A Darien woman found that her credit card was used to buy food at a Darien restaurant earlier this month and that many of her other online accounts had been compromised and someone else had been logged into them. The McLaren Road resident said her credit card was also used to charge $1,500 for her Uber account. Police didn’t say when the theft was discovered, but the woman reported it on Monday, May 11. The compromised accounts included her Facebook, Amazon and Venmo memberships. Police didn’t say whether or not the woman was using the same password for the compromised accounts, an obvious way for an identity thief with one password to get to the others.
