Police: Aroused by Strangers After Passing Out Behind Wheel of Her Running Car, Woman Drives Into Light Pole

A 33-year-old woman with a child in her car was found behind the wheel, passed out at the intersection of Tokeneke Road and Old Farm Road, police said. When she was aroused by witnesses, she immediately drove the SUV she was driving into a light pole, toppling it, police said. Police did not report that the woman, the child in the car or anyone else was injured in the incident, which happened just before police were called at 2:24 a.m. on Saturday, July 22, police said. When a 18-year-old driver on Bailey Avenue tried to make a U-turn in his 2008 Saturn Vue, he hit a tree, and his air bag deployed, Darien police said. At about 6 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15, Darien police were called to a lawn in front of a business at 120 Tokeneke Road, where a white BMW was parked and a state police trooper was already on the scene. The trooper said she had been flagged down by a driver on Interstate 95 who told her that a person in a vehicle appeared to be in distress on Tokeneke Road.

Police: Woman, 48, Charged with DUI After Driving Intoxicated on Pot, Alcohol or Both

A 48-year-old woman who couldn’t pass a field sobriety test was charged with driving while under the influence, although she couldn’t or wouldn’t submit to a urine test and police did not request a breath test, Darien police said. According to the police report, she said she had a small amount of alcohol earlier the night she was arrested. Police found a potent liquid with the active ingredient of marijuana on her and the strong odor of marijuana when they spoke with her. But with no tests done, they don’t know what substance caused her to be unable to complete the field sobriety test. A 61-year-old man was intoxicated at about 5:15 p.m., Sunday, when he backed his car into another vehicle, damaging it, and then drove away, Darien police said. Darien police described the incident with this account (including accusations not proven in court):

At 5:15 p.m., police were called by the owner of the parked car, who said the other vehicle, a 2002 Audi S8, drove away. The victim followed the Audi to a parking lot at 157 Rowayton Ave. in Rowayton, about a mile away, and Darien police went there. The Audi driver, who lives on Shorefront Drive in Norwalk, was still sitting in his car and the engine was running when police arrived.

A Darien police officer driving on Interstate 95 spotted a car driving as slow as 45 mph and then as fast as 75, changing lanes without signaling and swerving within the lane, so the car was pulled over, police said. The officer was driving on the northbound side of the highway at 2:47 a.m. when the car, a 2013 Dodge Dart, was seen as it approached the Darien North rest stop. The officer activated emergency lights and had the car pull over. The driver was directed to park in the lot at the rest stop.

Darien police this weekend arrested a 59-year-old woman on a warrant after an August car accident that sent both drivers to the hospital. Police described the events with this account (including accusations not proven in court):

At about 9:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 15, the woman was driving a 2005 Mercury Sable east on Middlesex Road near its intersection with Laurel Lane when she went into the opposite traffic lane just as a 20-year-old Darien man, driving west, was headed toward her. The Darien man, in a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu, swerved into the opposite lane to avoid the oncoming car, but his vehicle was hit. It was damaged heavily on its right (passenger) side and in the rear.

Just as a 55-year-old woman got off the Exit 12 ramp on Tokeneke Road, a police officer saw her car swerve in its lane and cross the double yellow line, an observation that led to an arrest for driving while under the influence, police said. At 12:19 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 3, Jeannette Bernhard of Bridgeport, took a left turn off of the exit ramp onto Tokeneke Road. A police officer was headed in the same direction and saw her driving the 2014 Toyota sedan as it traveled west on the street. The officer followed the car on the Post Road west to the intersection with Mansfield Avenue and pulled it over near there.

At 12:38 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 7, a police officer saw a Chevrolet fail to stop for the stop sign at the corner of Center Street and Old Kings Highway South. When he stopped the vehicle and spoke with the driver, he smelled alcohol coming from inside the car. The driver told police she had been drinking at Darien Social.

Tip: When driving toward a police patrol car at 3:30 a.m., do not suddenly turn off your headlights. It will not make you less conspicuous. That, according to a Darien police report, is what a 17-year-old Darien boy did last Thursday while driving north on Long Neck Point Road (to be fair, we don’t actually know why he turned off the headlights). The result was that the police officer turned around, followed the 2007 Jeep Wrangler and saw it cross over the yellow line on the roadway. The officer pulled over the vehicle.

A 20-year-old McCrae Road man was charged with driving while under the influence after a 7 p.m. traffic accident on Aug. 5, then arrested on domestic violence charges at about 9:30 p.m. the next evening, police said. Police were called to the intersection of McCrae Road and Old Kings Highway South on a report of a traffic accident. The man was driving a 2004 Infinity G35, which received heavy front-end damage and the air bags deployed when the accident occurred with a UPS truck. The McCrae Road man said he had no idea what had happened.

A 33-year-old woman driving east on the Post Road hit another car, causing a minor accident, but a police officer who showed up noticed the woman smelled of alcohol and had difficulty standing, police said. Near the intersection of Leroy Avenue 2008 Mercedes e350 as the driver of that car was waiting for traffic to turn left onto Leroy Avenue, the car was hit from behind by the 33-year-old Norwalk woman behind the wheel of a 2009 Honda Civic. A police officer called to the scene directed both drivers to move their cars out of the intersection, to get out of the way of heavy traffic.

Glassy-eyed, smelling of alcohol and driving through downtown past midnight with a damaged tail light, an 18-year-old was charged last Tuesday with driving while under the influence, police said. At about 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 12, a police officer on patrol noticed that the left rear tail light was not working on a car traveling at a high rate of speed east on the Post Road downtown. The officer turned the patrol car around and followed. The patrol car started following the car, a white 1997 Mercedes Benz C-280. The Mercedes abruptly slowed down and turned into an office parking lot at 1500 Post Road (across the street from Spring Grove Cemetery).

A 53-year-old woman driving downtown at midnight, July 4 to 5, had more than double the legal limit of alcohol when she hit the front end of a fire engine parked in front of Darien Fire Department, police said. Darien police described the incident with this account (including accusations not proven in court):

The woman, a Norwalk resident, later told police she was driving home from a party in Milford. State police later told Darien police that they had received complaints about the woman’s erratic driving on Interstate 95. She had passed Norwalk on the highway and got off at Exit 11, then started driving east on the Post Road, through the center of town. A police officer on regular patrol was driving behind her vehicle, a 2000 Lexus RX station wagon SUV and noticed that her left-turn signal was on, although she was driving straight through town.

A 52-year-old woman was charged with driving while intoxicated after a police officer saw her drive the wrong way on the one-way part of Center Street downtown, then drive over both the fog line and the double yellow line on Mansfield Avenue, police said. At 1:56 a.m. on Sunday, July 3, an officer saw two vehicles going the wrong way on Center Street, where it’s a one-way road just behind the restaurants and bars along Tokeneke Road. The officer followed the vehicles as they turned onto Old Kings Highway South, then Tokeneke Road, the Post Road and then north on Mansfield Avenue. The officer saw one of the vehicles, a white BMW X4 cross the “fog line” on the right side of the road, then drift across the double yellow line in the middle of the road, until it was straddling he roadway in the area of Buttonwood Lane. The officer signaled for the car to pull over, which it did after about 20 seconds.
