When a 18-year-old driver on Bailey Avenue tried to make a U-turn in his 2008 Saturn Vue, he hit a tree, and his air bag deployed, Darien police said.
And from the police account, it looks like his trouble was only beginning.
Darien police described what happened with this account, including accusations not proven in court:
The man was out of the SUV when police arrived after the accident was reported at 9:25 p.m. on Dec. 27. The vehicle’s air bag had deployed. He had been driving alone.
As a precaution, he was taken to a hospital by an ambulance, so police didn’t perform field sobriety tests or blood-alcohol tests back at Police Headquarters.
The man, a resident of Cedar Street in Norwalk, said he’d been drinking earlier that night — a vodka and a few beers.

Police later applied for a search warrant of the man’s hospital records from that night, and based on the records charged him with driving while under the influence of alcohol, operating an unregistered motor vehicle and making an improper turn.
The medical records showed the man had the equivalent of what would have appeared as a 0.17 blood-alcohol content, had a breath test been administered. That’s just over double the legal limit of 0.08.
The man was notified when an arrest warrant was approved, and he turned himself in on Feb. 14. He was released on a $500 bond and is scheduled to appear Feb. 24 in state Superior Court in Stamford.
