The television production talents of area students will be on display on Darien TV79 as the station has concluded a “Best of Darien” video challenge to students studying digital media at Norwalk Community College. — an announcement from Darien TV79

“We asked the NCC students to visit Darien and shoot a montage of local scenes featuring the ‘Best of Darien’, and the results were phenomenal,” says TV79 Program Director Jim Cameron. “These budding videographers saw our town through fresh eyes, yet captured the scenes that make Darien so special.”

The project was a class assignment by Assistant Professor Julie Casper-Roth who leads NCC’s digital media division. “It was a win-win-win project,” says Ms. Casper-Roth. “The students got real life field experience, great feedback on their projects from the judges, and TV79 got 11 fresh station ID ‘bumpers’”

The 30- to 60-second spots highlight such icon Darien scenes as Tilley Pond, the Darien Library, the Darien YMCA, shoppers on the Post Road and our local beaches.

It should be easier to find and watch programs on Darien TV79, the town government’s cable TV channel, now that it’s started its own stand-alone website, DarienTV79.com, the cable station announced. “We’ve put everything in one easy-to-access location,” said Jim Cameron, program director and co-founder of the station. “After almost 14 years of operation, airing thousands of meetings and community events, our new Internet home offers seamless access to all our offerings.”

The new website offers:

—Key-word search of videos by committee name and date

—Access to over 2,500 meeting videos stored on Vimeo

—One-click access to the week’s most recent shows

—a link to TV79’s live feed in prime time

—a complete playlist of all meetings by committee name

—the ability to toggle between the meeting video and the meeting agenda

—timestamps for the Planning & Zoning Commission and the Board of Finance

—an easy signup for the weekly TV79 Program Guide by email

Designed by TV79’s Chief Technology Officer Cecil Wade, the new website was funded by the town government, Optimum subscribers and grants from The Darien Foundation. In a meeting of the Darien TV79 Advisory Council back in January, Wade said the new website would make it easier and faster for the volunteers running the channel to get video recordings posted on the Internet. That should also make the process more reliable, he said.

Darien TV79 has launched an online survey asking town residents to find out what they watch — and would like to watch — on the town’s government television station. — an announcement from Darien TV79

Since 2007 Darien TV79 has offered live, taped-replay and on-demand access to all board, committee and RTM government meetings in town. In addition it carries programs of community interest, including town-wide events like the Memorial Day Parade. But in recent months new technology grants from the Darien Foundation have allowed the station to air dozens of different programs each day on its Altice cable Channel 79, along with locally produced shows about community non-profits, public service announcements and public affairs items.

“We’re curious about which of these new offerings is capturing viewers’ attentions,” says Jim Cameron, Program Director of the station. “We’re also interested to hear what other kinds of local programming Darien residents would like to see.”

The online survey, which takes two minutes to complete, can be found here.
