Did you know that as you get older, you have a greater chance of getting Type 2 diabetes?  You have a greater chance of getting diabetes if you are age 45 or older, are overweight or obese, or have a family history of diabetes, according to the National Institute of Diabetes. Brian from Walgreens Pharmacy will be here to discuss some simple lifestyle changes that will help you prevent or manage Diabetes.

Darien Senior Programs welcomes for the first time Duo Del Norte.  Sharon Levin teamed up with Westport guitarist, Gene Pino, and they created Duo Del Norte.  They perform a blend of Latin American music with Classical, Renaissance, Baroque, Romantic and Great American and International Standards. Students from the Middlesex Middle School Jazz Ensemble will be here to perform before lunch.  The Jazz Ensemble is an auditioned ensemble that meets before regularly scheduled school hours and performs a repertoire of music from the Jazz genre.  These talented children are led by James Carter (Alumni Swing Band) and the talent is amazing!  Please come enjoy some music and lunch with this fun group of kids! Join James McGinn, LPC, NCC with Center for HOPE/Family Centers, Darien, for a monthly (last Wednesday) literary treat (poem, story, philosophical or inspirational essay) as springboard into sharing from our own stories and concerns. As meetings progress, participants will also be invited (although not obliged) to share their own narratives, spoken or written, biographical or fictional and to share their own truths. We will explore how creativity motivates, comforts, unsettles and keeps us on our toes.

New Cardio/Strengthen Class

Begins Tuesday March 21 at 10 a.m.
$4.00
Linda (Thursday low impact aerobics instructor) will be introducing a new cardio/strengthen and Stretch class beginning Tuesday, March 21 at 10 a.m.
The class will be held weekly on Tuesdays.  The cost is $4.00.  Linda will lead the group through a three part program that will improve strength, flexibility, and endurance.  The class is slightly more challenging — but one handed pushups will not be required! Dr. Moskowitz will present on common Urological issues for both male and female —bladder, prostrate and kidney. New Chair Yoga Class! Thursday, March 23 at 10:00 a.m.

Chair yoga is perfect for seniors who have difficulty getting on the ground or with limited mobility.  The class is taught on chairs while using classic modified yoga poses.

Doreen Frey of RVNA’s diet and nutrition division will be coming to give a presentation on “Then and Now Cooking.”  Doreen will explore healthy lifestyle nutritional meals.  Please bring in a favorite healthy meal recipe to share. Serendipity Chorale

The Serendipity Chorale was formed in 1976 by Gigi Van Dyke and has performed with civil rights activist and folk legend Pete Seeger, pop singer Andy Williams, opera singer Betty Jones, and the Norwalk Symphony, among others. In 2000, the Chorale was honored by then Governor Jodi Rell as a “Connecticut Treasure.”  The Serendipity Chorale is a volunteer singing group whose membership comprises of singers hailing from all throughout Fairfield County.  The choir performs at many venues. Covering 22 acres of midtown Manhattan, and named for John D. Rockefeller Jr. who privately undertook this project during the Great Depression, Rockefeller Center is a tour de force of Art Deco architecture, sculpture, and artwork.  Famous for its Christmas tree, skating rink, and music hall, this National Historic Landmark remains one of New York’s most favorite attractions. Eight week session beginning 10 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 31, Darien Senior Program 2 Renshaw Road 203-656-7490
A Matter of Balance is designed to reduce fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults. The program was developed and formally evaluated by the Royal Center for Enhancement of Late-Life Function at Boston University with a grant from the National Institute on Aging. A Matter of Balance acknowledges the risk of falling but emphasizes practical coping strategies to reduce this concern. Trained facilitators, students from Fairfield University School of Nursing, conduct eight 1 1/2-hour sessions for a group of 10-12 participants.
