Barbara Jane Fuller departed this world peacefully on June 17 at her home in Marion, Massachusetts after a brief illness, surrounded by her five daughters and numerous grandchildren. She was 89 years old. “Bobby” was born on Sept. 2, 1930 in Newton, Massachusetts. She attended the Northhampton School and Elmira College, where she sang in the choir and earned a bachelor’s degree in education.
After a life of kindness, Nina Rusko of Sandy Hook died of complications of metastatic cancer on June 5, 2020 in Danbury. She was 74. Much of her adult life was spent in Darien with her husband, attorney John J. Berger, and their sons, Nicholas Rusko-Berger of Baltimore and Winston Berger (Nancy Wallin) of Richmond, California. Her sweet, helpful family includes granddaughters Amanda Rusko-Berger (Drew Eco) and Ava Rusko-Berger of Baltimore; and brother Nicholas M. Rusko and sister-in-law Nancy Rusko of Rockland, Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Nicholas M. Rusko, a mechanical engineer and inventor, and Mary (Chabina) Rusko, an office manager and expert seamstress.
Edward Parsons “Bud” Corning, Jr., a former longtime Darien resident, passed away peacefully in Greenville, Rhode Island on June 24, 2020. Born June 5, 1930 in New York City, Bud was the son of Edward Parsons Corning and Valerie Ebbets Corning. A lifelong sailor, he grew up in Stamford, CT on Shippan Point, sailing at Stamford Yacht Club and later at Noroton Yacht Club in Darien, CT where he raced in the Ensign and then the Sonar fleets. Bud attended King School in Stamford, Westminster School and Bard College before entering the family business, the Edward Corning Company, a construction management firm founded by his grandfather in New York in 1898, where his father was then president. He became secretary-treasurer at the company, which built many school and college buildings, banks, office buildings, YMCA buildings and hospital buildings primarily in New York and Connecticut.
Shirley R. Sanders, 85, widow of Henry Marshall Sanders, of Exeter and formerly of Darien, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 26, 2020 at Riverwoods in Exeter, New Hampshire. She was born on Sept. 7, 1934 at Fort Monroe, Virginia to Edward Galen and Doris Evelyn (Broadstreet) Reese. She was a graduate of Hampton High School in Hampton, Virginia, Class of 1952, and went on to attended Mary Washington College. Shirley was formerly an editorial assistant at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Alan J. Edly, 84, passed away on June 14, 2020. Born June 22, 1935 in New York City, Alan is the son of Alexander and Grace (Hauss) Edly. Al attended Xavier High School in New York City and went on to graduate magna cum laude from the College of the Holy Cross in 1957. In 1963 he received an MBA from New York University. Al began his career as a staff accountant at Arthur Andersen & Co.
Alice Marie (Garrity) Pinney passed away peacefully on June 25 at Langdon Place of Dover, New Hampshire, after spending her lifetime loving others. Throughout her life, she led her family with kindness and compassion. Alice created an atmosphere of warmth and care around her by always appreciating others for their best qualities. Born May 6, 1930, she was the daughter of the late James and Veronica (McNamara) Garrity. She was raised in Stamford and Darien.
Don MacKenzie, a former Darien resident, passed away after suffering a heart attack in Vail, Colorado over the 4th of July weekend. He was was born on Jan. 4, 1963 in Darien to the late Warren Gair MacKenzie and the late Phoebe Connor MacKenzie. Don was educated at Principia High School in St. Louis and Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts.
Charles Ferris “Chick” Scribner, a lifelong resident of Darien, died peacefully at his home on Saturday, June 27. He was 96. Born March 14, 1924 in Darien, he was the son of the late Harold Blaine and Alice Lee Scribner. Chick attended Darien Public Schools and graduated from Darien High School in 1942. He then served for three years in the U.S. Army in the China-Burma-India Theater during World War II.
Edward Davidson “David” Humphrey died peacefully on Friday, June 26, 2020 at Mercy Hospital. He was 44. Loving husband of Shannon; dearest father of Cooper, Layne and Bella; son of Susan Rouse Hall (Steve) and Stephen Humphrey (Mary Lou); brother of Scott Humphrey (Courtney) of Cincinnati, OH, Brian Humphrey (Tucker) of Boulder, CO and Elizabeth Coppola (David) of Boston, MA. Uncle to nine nieces and nephews. David was born in Darien on July 21, 1975.
Greda Ann (Fogelberg) DiSilvestro of Stratford, formerly of Darien, passed away peacefully at the age of 90 on Saturday, June 20. She was the wife of the late Louis DiSilvestro and the daughter of the late Svante and Mildred (Clark) Fogelberg. She was predeceased by her two brothers, Kurt and Henrik Fogelberg. Greda was born in Panama and raised in Liberty, Missouri. She was a graduate of the University of Connecticut, with a major in home economics.
Donald R. Iodice, 81, passed away on June 18 at home in Vero Beach, Florida. Don was born in Bridgeport, to Palma and Donato Iodice. His legacy is one of a deep love of and commitment to family and friends, lifelong learning, many leadership roles throughout his life, and as a teacher and mentor to many. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy. After being an owner of Kings Highway Pharmacy in Darien, he changed direction and received his J.D. from St John’s Law School.
Andrew R. Borghi, 59, of Darien, passed away on Saturday, June 13, 2020. He was born in Lansing, Michigan on Nov. 30, 1960. Andrew was a graduate of Rippowam High School, Stamford, Class of 1979. He was a custom home builder in lower Fairfield and Westchester counties.
Former Darien resident Douglas Joseph Shaw, passed away early Monday morning June 15, 2020 at his home in Brielle, New Jersey.He was 65. Doug was born Nov. 26, 1954 to Joseph and Mary Shaw of Long Island. His career was in commodities trading, but his life was so much more than his work. When one thinks of Doug the first thought that comes to mind is his devotion to his children.
Walter Lewis Burrows, Jr., 86, formerly of East Norwalk, passed away on April 17, 2020 in Wilton Meadows Health Care Center. Born Oct. 26, 1933, to Walter L. Burrows, Sr., an antiques dealer, and Viola A. (Hallett) Burrows an artist and interior designer, in Barnstable, Massachusetts. Walter was predeceased by a sister, Natalie, in 2001. The family moved to Darien early in Walter’s life.
Jean Anderson Rittenhouse Stouter passed away on April 5, 2020 at the Western Rehabilitation Care Center in Danbury. June 15 would have been the celebration of her 93rd birthday. She was born Jean Sylvia Anderson in Darien and was the eldest daughter of the famed Prohibition Era Darien police officer known as “the Lone Wolf of the Boston Post Road.” June 15, 2020, would have been the celebration of her 93rd birthday. Despite being born legally deaf and suffering from multiple sclerosis, Jean went on to defy all the odds with her indomitable spirit.
