Police: Former Employee, 26, Arrested After Stealing Paychecks at Country Club

A 26-year-old former employee of Woodway Country Club has been arrested on theft charges after security video showed him both at the club the night of the December theft of paychecks and other video showed him cashing the checks, police said. Darien police gave this account of the incident and investigation, including accusations not proven in court:

Sometime overnight from Dec. 11 to 12, numerous paychecks and gift cards meant for employees were stolen after they were left out on a desktop at the club, located on Hoyt Street. An employee told police, who were received the report on Dec. 16, that phone chargers, a vacuum, a sweatshirt and even toilet paper and face masks were also missing.

A resident of Raymond Heights road recently was told by her wireless carrier that she’d bought two iPhones — although she hadn’t. She checked her wireless bill and found that she’d been signed up for an installment plan for the two phones, with payments added to her monthly bill. When she reported the matter to police on March 5, she was asked about any recent suspicious activity that could have given fraudsters her personal information. She recalled an unsolicited email from her internet provider asking her to confirm some information. She had clicked on a link and typed in her personal information.
