Gates open at 6:30 p.m. tonight for Darien’s annual fireworks display at Darien High School. Expect the viewer area to be farther from the rockets’ red glare this year, but you’ll still see the bombs bursting in air. The stadium seating available most years is off limits tonight, with a construction project involving underground power lines making that area unavailable. There is an area on the far side of the school for those who want a little less bang (see the fuzzy map below, upper righthand corner). If you want to park your car on the high school campus, you’d better have a parking pass with you.

Darien’s fireworks display on Saturday night is expected to be crowded, as usual, so police are again issuing a statement about traffic regulations at Darien High School for that night. You can still get permits to park your car on the high school campus. Go to the First Selectman’s Office in Town Hall, the earlier the better. Town Hall closes at 4:30 p.m., but try not to get there at the last minute. See also: Darien Fireworks This Saturday, July 7: Fireworks Passes for Sale at Town Hall

If you don’t have a parking pass, you can still go to the fireworks, but you’ll have to park on streets or parking lots where parking is permitted.

After some problems finding the right location for the annual town fireworks display, town officials have agreed to hold them at the high school after all, but apparently at a different spot on the campus. Darien will get its 2018 fireworks on July 7, with a rain date of July 8, after school district officials agreed on a site at Darien High School and the town Parks and Recreation Department took over organization of the event, Selectman Susan Marks and volunteer Stacey Tie said in an announcement, giving proof Thursday afternoon that the fireworks will still be there. “We are so grateful to the Darien Parks and Recreation Department, they have raised their hand to plan the 2018 town fireworks!” Marks and Tie said. “Thank you also, to David Genovese and the many sponsors who year after year make donations to this wonderful community event.

Rockets’ red glare and bombs bursting in air in a fireworks event may yet happen o’er the land of the (blue) wave at Darien High School this July, according Selectman Susan Marks said at a recent Board of Selectmen meeting0. [The following three paragraphs are an update at 10:05 p.m., Wednesday:]

Board of Education Chairperson Tara Ochman sounded supportive on Wednesday at a Board of Education meeting. “We have been happy to host that event on our grounds for the community,” Ochman said during the “Chairperson’s Report” section of the agenda near the beginning of the meeting. Even with construction expected to make stadium seating unavailable, there’s still plenty of room on the campus, she said. “We’ll talk to the Fireworks Committee about protecting our facility and our fields […] They always have done the right thing,” she said.
