Janey Choi, Stamford Symphony's new director of community engagement and education, has been a violinist with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra.

Dr. Janey Choi has been hired as the first director of community engagement and education.

As she joins the organization, her initial challenge will be to re-imagine the strategy for all the community and education work that the Stamford Symphony produces.

Within her purview, she will facilitate opportunities for the Orchestra to engage with the wider Fairfield County communities and school systems, and bring new audiences to our concerts.

“I am so excited to be joining the team at Stamford Symphony. Music can be a powerful tool to build and strengthen connections within communities and I’m looking forward to exploring ways to deepen our engagement with Stamford and Fairfield County,” Choi said.

Janey Choi, Stamford Symphony\’s new director of community engagement and education, has been a violinist with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra.

Choi comes to Stamford Symphony with extensive talent and experience as she is currently a teaching artist for the New York Philharmonic and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center as well as a part-time music teacher/violin faculty member at the Town School in New York City.

In her various posts, she has hosted Young People’s Concerts, worked with public school systems including creating and teaching curricula with teachers, designed and performed interactive school and family concerts, coached high school orchestra and band programs, among other things.

She holds both a bachelors degree and a masters degree in music from the Juilliard School as well as a Doctor of Musical Arts from the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University.

“The Orchestra is delighted that our community engagement and education work is to be given a larger footprint in Fairfield County,” said Peter Weitzner, Chairman of the Orchestra Committee and Double Bass. “We welcome the appointment of Janey Choi and look forward to fruitful collaborations in the season ahead.”

Choi will soon be immersing herself with all members of the Stamford Symphony community including board members, orchestra members, teachers, community leaders, youth music organizations and any other interested parties who look to collaborate with the Orchestra.
