The Darien Community Association (DCA) is offering new Bridge classes starting on Tuesday, Jan. 26 and Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2016.
CLASSES
Bridge 3:
Meredith Dunne
This course focuses on more bidding concepts and polishing your basic bidding language – reviewing and enhancing bidding principles learned in Beginning Bridge.
The class emphasizes the importance of efficiently showing both your hand strength and distribution, and introduces modern approaches to major suit raises, Jacoby Transfers, basic defense, and an introduction to competitive bidding. Prerequisite — Bridge 2. Instructor Joan Bergen.
Bridge 3 will be held on Tuesday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for six weeks on Jan. 26 & Feb. 2, 9, 16, 23 & March 1.
Bridge 4:
This class moves on to Takeout Doubles, Pre-emptive bidding, as well as an introduction on bidding high point value hands. We also focus on the play of the hand. Instructor Joan Bergen.
Bridge 4 will be held on Wednesday mornings from 9:00am-11:00am for six weeks on January 27 & February 3, 17, 24 & March 2, 9.
Bridge 6
Joan Bergen
This class is designed for people who already know how to play bridge but want to improve or update their bidding. Common conventions played today in Standard American Bridge are covered in depth.
These include Jacoby 2NT, Bergen Raises, Splinter Bids, Slam Bidding and an introduction to 2/1 game force. This sequential series builds a detailed foundation for bidding. Each lesson has practice hands designed to illustrate the concepts being discussed. This course is not on a beginning level. Instructor Meredith Dunne.
Bridge 6 will be held on Wednesday afternoons from 1:00pm-3:00pm for six weeks on Jan. 27, Feb. 3, 17, 24 and March 2, 9.
Bridge 8
These classes will be “Putting it all Together”: bidding, defense and play of the hand. For intermediate players only. Instructor Meredith Dunne.

INSTRUCTORS
Instructor Joan Bergen is a long-time Darien resident and Bridge Life Master who, after studying bridge intently for 8 years, is driven to teach others. Students will benefit from Joan’s enthusiasm and love for the game that she describes as both a great way to meet people, and a great activity to keep the mind sharp. She’s developing quite a following!
Instructor Meredith Dunne is a long-time Darien resident who, after studying bridge intently for 8 years, is also driven to teach others. Students will benefit from Meredith’s enthusiasm and patient, personable demeanor.
REGISTRATION & FEES
Course fees are $170, or $150 for DCA members. Prepayment is required, and registration closes at noon on Friday, Jan. 22. A minimum number of prepaid students is necessary to run the class.
