A man who lives on Walmsley Road told police that someone claiming to be him had tried to open an account in his name at an expensive department store, a financial services company and at a car dealership.

The man received a notice from his credit monitoring company that Wells Fargo Bank had performed a credit check on him, although when he contacted Wells Fargo, the bank denied it.

On Monday, Dec. 16, the man found that credit checks had been run by Nordstrom and USAA when both companies were considering a request to open an account in the Darien man’s name.

On Tuesday, Dec. 17, the man received another notification, saying that a credit check had been run by Victory Auto Group, a dealership in the Bronx.

The man contacted the dealership and got a copy of the identification document used by a person claiming to be him.

The ID was a fake Connecticut driver’s license with the Walmsley Road man’s personal information on it, but an invalid license number. An employee at the dealership said he had become suspicious and did a Google search of the victim’s name online.

The person who had provided the driver’s license was black, but the employee found pictures of the Walmsley Road man that showed he is white.

When the employee confronted the man who had given him the license, the man left the dealership.

The Walmsley Road man contacted police on Wednesday, Dec. 18.
