Mary Lawrence Huffman, winner of Darien’s 2016-2017 Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award.

An annual presentation of Darien’s Good Wife’s River NSDAR Chapter, this award is given to a Darien High School senior who best exemplifies the qualities of patriotism, citizenship, leadership, dependability and service to the home, school and community.

Mary Lawrence was selected by the senior class and the faculty of DHA to receive this award. She recently received the certificate and pin from DAR Good Citizen Chairman, Kim Kiner and Good Wife’s River Chapter Regent, Katherine Love during the DAR holiday reception at the home of Winifred and Tom Lom.

Mary Lawrence is currently President of (SOS) Support Our Soldiers Club and recently volunteered by collecting sponsorships for Wreaths Across America, a worldwide wreath-laying tribute to veterans being held locally on Dec. 17, at Spring Grove Veterans’ Cemetery in Darien. This year, SOS joined members of the local VFW Post #6933 and Darien’s Monuments and Ceremonies Commission in soliciting wreaths.

Huffman is a member of the National Honor Society and a reporter for Neirad, the school newspaper.

A varsity athlete and a captain of the Cross Country and Track teams, Mary Lawrence also teaches fresh water kayaking as a summer camp counselor.

Huffman is a member of the Big Brother/Big Sister now known as the LINK program which helps freshmen and transfer students feel comfortable and adjust to student life at Darien High School. Mary Lawrence also volunteers at Person to Person, Atria Darien and the Noroton Presbyterian Church where she is a member. After college, she hopes to pursue a career in business or political science.
